jig join:2001-01-05 Hacienda Heights, CA | [TWC] Motorola DCX3400 not working after power loss Just wanted to see if someone else had this happen to them, and wondering how to fix:
power outage for about 30 seconds, about an hour ago (6:30pm, Sun, Pacific Time). tv and cable box were on and functioning at the beginning. tv is working now, but cable box/DVR is now not working.
symptoms: upon powering, all the front screen indicators flash, then the indicators read "88:8'8." . Then, abut every 30 seconds or so, all the indicators flash and go back to the 8s. I've notice once that the 8s disappeared, leaving just the period, but that hasn't happened for awhile. I don't hear the hard drive spinning up, but the fan is on.
Any guesses? Should I just bring to a TW shop and have them swap it out? There were some things I'd like on the hard drive, but it's not a big deal - they're all replaceable. Is it worth cracking the box to see if I can suss it out myself? If I had to hazard a guess, the hard drive went bad, and the thing won't work if the drive won't spin.
I did try letting it sit for about 20 min and then re-powering - no joy. since it's sunday, there's a chance it was in the middle of downloading guide data or a new rom file or something and it crapped out due to data corruption, but that seems far fetched. also, our other cable box (non-DVR) and the data/phone modem are fine, so we should have good connection to the head end.
Thanks - hopefully I can do this by driving down to the local shop rather than having them drive by (which would mean me waiting between 8am and 3pm or whatever). It seems it's easier to get a "new" box from a van than it is from a local shop, though.
By the way, is there a particularly good type of HD PVR cable box to ask for? My guess is that the DCX3400 is still pretty much the better choice, but I might as well ask now. -- Catapultam habeo. Your best bet is to take it to your local service center for replacement. | | jig join:2001-01-05 Hacienda Heights, CA | i let it reboot for about an hour and a half and it finally started working again. i might not have heard the hard drive spin up, so i don't know if it was just waiting for data from the head end or if it finally spun up on its own. just in case, i'm going to check the voltage at the socket - it could be that we have a partially blown breaker or something and it's getting undervoltaged or something. other than that, my plan is to keep using it until it starts making horrible sounds OR dies completely. sigh. -- Catapultam habeo.
