transfer passwords from FF3.6.23 to FF9.0.1

hi there,

just wondering how to go about transferring saved passwords from an older version of FF to 9.0.1. the newer version is already installed and running, and i don't need the rest of the older version profile.

thanks!

I don't remember the details for 3.6.x

If there are files "key3.db" and "signons.sqlite" then just copy those over to the new profile.

The passwords will be in "signons.sqlite", and information on encrypting the passwords will be in "key3.db". I'm not sure whether those file formats and sqlite version have changed, but firefox is usually good about handling and updating older formats.

There is an Add-on Password Exporter that should accomplish what you need to do. »addons.mozilla.org/addon/2848

after i posted, i saw that i could just use the built-in saved password menus (under security) to export and import. some were duplicates and were not imported (even after clearing the passwords from the new install), so there's still a little bit of manual checking, but it appears to work fine.

i had a harder time trying to find the bookmarks manager in FF9 - it's not apparent that you need to click on "see all bookmarks" to get into it, or better, just use key command cntl-shift-B. now i'm trying to find a tweak that allows deleting bookmarks within the bookmark menu rather than having to use the side bar or the manager.

thanks for the posts, guys.

When in doubt, right-click. Context menus are your friend.

it would have been easier if right clicking brought up a menu that included "bookmark manager". mine does not.

Maybe not (though, maybe, there's an add-on which does?), but there is a 'Delete' option (which is what you said you wanted to do).

ah - as far as "delete" - it's greyed out (in the right click menu) unless i'm in the sidebar or the bookmark manager.

That's odd... I don't use it all that much, but I've never seen it greyed out--don't know what would cause that. Works fine for me for bookmarks & for folders.

even odder, now it seems i CAN delete and such - it's not greyed out anymore. maybe i needed to restart after importing the bookmarks first. arg.

I usually just copy my bookmarks over--I have a subset that's sort of a "starter set" of bookmarks that I copy to most new installs, and others I copy as needed. (just a simple copy & paste) Your suggestion as to why 'Delete' may have been greyed out sounds as plausible as anything else to me.
