brianmcdPremium join:2000-09-06 Norristown, PA | HP Pavilion DV4170US Wont Charge OEM Battery I am trying to help a friend with a HP Pavilion Dv4170US Laptop.
Their original HP Battery just won't hold longer than a 2 minute charge (if that). So far I have tried 3 different OEM Batteries and they all have the same problem. When I install the new OEM Battery the charging indicator on the HP Laptop will NOT come on. If I put the HP Battery back in the charging indicator comes on.
I have run the HP Battery Check Utility and it can not talk to the OEM Battery to give me a status. When the OEM Battery first come from the factory they have a 50 to 60% and will provide power to the laptop. I have tried the Calibration Routine (Boot to Safe Mode and let the battery Drain), with no change.
I could see a defective OEM Battery in the mix, but not 3 and am stumped at the moment. Before I tell my friend that they need to spend a lot more money on an Original HP Battery I would like to see if anyone has anything else that I can try.
Thanks. |

Possible that the system knows it is not an HP branded battery and refuses to charge it. May have to do some further research on that possibility. I've never seen that but im not intimately familiar with every model out there. |

I tried the OEM battery that had been in the laptop , but it does not have a charge ( I previously drained it in a calibration). So the light appears to be correct and it is not charging the battery. |

Since the light works with the correct battery I would suggest purchasing the correct battery. There is nothing specifically to indicate the system is the culprit at this point.
If you can verify with certainty that the system will not charge batteries which it doesn't deem "correct", that would help seal the deal. |

I ran a 3rd Party Utility: BatteryCare (»batterycare.net/en/index.html) which showed that the OEM Battery was at a Zero Percent Charge, but also reporting that it was Fully Charged.
If the HP Laptop sees the Fully Charged Indicator I could see why it would turn off the charging system. |
