 | Is it true Teksavvy Cable goes by an "honour" system? Someone told me that even with the 300GB, you don't get charged for overages because there is no meter for it. Now I'm not talking 2TB, I'm saying 100GB over (which is and should be peanuts).
Is this true? I think last month I accidentally went over 75GB and I wasn't charged anything extra. |

| Re: Is it true Teksavvy Cable goes by an "honour" syst TekSavvy has never commented officially so I doubt you'll get a definitive answer. TekSavvy has however always been lax about small overages. Both in their policy that your cap is actually "no two consecutive months can total over 600GB", and that they don't bill for small overages. However, with the new rates the CRTC has set expect them to be less lenient starting in February. Though I still doubt they'd bill you for 310GB. -- Taylor Byrnes |

 | Thanks for the reply. Do you have link to where I can learn about the upcoming changes? |

 | Thanks. Not that bad, I was expecting much worse and UBB. But I suppose I'll have to compromise for a $5 increase. Not pleased, but not much I can do either. |
|
 | My understanding is that they have no way to tell at all if you use 3TB or 1GB in a month on cable in Ontario at least. |
|
 | That's good news. I should probably catch up on my downloading for a few days before the changes kick in. |
|
 | As far as i know nothing is changing in this respect with the new pricing so i don't think there is any rush. |
|
 | Oh so it's just the small price increase? Even better! Thanks for the info dude. |

| reply to Aftcomet Actually, according to my last chat with someone in the direct forums they're working to get a usage tracking tool out by the 2nd... so no more honor system at that point I believe.... of course, as usual I'd take this info with a grain of salt until there's some sort of official post........ :P |

They have commented officially if you look hard enough. There is no usage monitor for cable, they cant track it right now because DHCP is done on rogers side, so they dont know who is whom.... they only get POI links of everyone together. On the videotron network videotron gives usage details to teksavvy, there is a website any videotron wholesaler can go to. On the rogers network that doesnt exist.

 | So then practically it is unlimited. Well since I am not paying the unlimited price, I am going to fair about it and not abuse it. |

| reply to the cerberus If you look hard enough they have also said they can request usage from Rogers for customers (to spot check?), and Rogers also sometimes send them high usage customers data....
So it still leaves things very much in the air, unless you choose to cherry pick your information. |
|
 | I've always been on the unlimited cable plan so I don't have to wonder about it. |

1 edit | reply to Aftcomet The word is in ontario, they can't check everyone's usage. If you go over by 20Gb, they'll let it slide.
However, if you abuse the connection i.e. pull 1TB -2TB of data while not being on the unlimited plan, you're going to get flagged and they'll get the data usage from rogers to bill you. That's where it really hurts. ($0.5 per GB)
If you're planning on downloading a lot, just buy the unlimited plan and be fair about it. There's no need to be a bandwidth thief. |

So it still leaves things very much in the air, unless you choose to cherry pick your information. I think there's a misconception here. They arent really monitoring your usage, but I assume at some point if a user has downloaded an extremely large amount, it may be flagged by rogers and they will be bill for overages.

Additional Bandwidth = $.50/GB/mo
What we are trying to say is, without being able to monitor your bandwidth they are going to be very lax about it..... but no one is abusing any connection, you will be billed and pay your fair share |
|
 | But even if they charge you for overages I'm sure there is a limit to the amount, right? I remember with Bell, even when their plans were severely capped, the maximum they would charge you is $30. It was like 25 or 50 cents a GB to a maximum of $30. So basically all of their plans were unlimited as long as you paid the price for it.
I mean it's pretty stupid to have an unlimited plan for a difference of $12 compared to the capped one, and then let's say if someone does download 1TB you charge them $350 for it. |

Sanek join:2006-08-10 Kanata, ON | reply to Aftcomet I'm quite sure that someone from TSI commented in the past that they have access to the tool to get the usage data (manually - not automated), but they don't provide it to users yet.
That was a while ago now (I'm thinking late Summer/early Fall). Either way, I wouldn't do it since this is really only either going to screw TSI or other users.
With the new pricing, you get a nice 6 hour unlimited/unmetered download window (2am-8am), so you can go schedule all your crazy downloads to happen during that time and just use your 600GB/2mo cap over the other time (new pricing comes in effect Feb 2). |
