Ebox 10 Gbits upgrade for Videotron TPIA

Hi Guys, just wanted to keep you in the loop. We will be upgrading our 1 Gbits port with Videotron for a 10 Gbits port.

ETA 3 months from now for upgrade as Videotron router does not support 10 GE interfaces at the moment.

Wonder which type of "does not support" we're talking about...
1- no spare 10G ports and 10G line cards are back-ordered
2- no spare card slot, getting a new router and/or shuffling stuff to free up some ports
3- the equipment does support 10G but is overdue for replacement so not worth upgrading, new equipment is back-ordered
4- the equipment is so old that it actually does not support 10G, which pegs it at 10+ years old vintage

Since Videotron was boasting about their state-of-the-art network a year or so ago, it should not be option #4.

We don't have that information but given the fact they are not able to process this type of request within 1 month lead me to believe they need to replace the router and install a new one. I am just speculating here, you could know better than me

I hope you guys will be able to put sufficient pressure on them so that this situation doesn't turn into a Rogers-type upgrade thing.

In any case, glad to see Videotron is owing up to their claim of being willing to cooperate with TPIA ISPs by not making much of a fuss about upgrading them to 10G.

When you coming back to Toronto? I'm currently happy with Distributel, but I know many others who are not happy with Rogers/Teksavvy that want to switch.

I have a feeling that the Videotron rep is female and can't resist diskace's charm which would explain why Videotron gives diskace such a good service

diskace: did you specifically ask for this, or did Videotron come to you and tell you that within 3 months 10g links would be available ?

When did this offer come ? This could be due to the part 1 from CNOC since with 10g links, it postpones by quite some time the need to provide load balancing across multiple links.

I wonder though how they translate that request. For all you know they're in fact giving you 10x 1 Gbit links and calling it 10 Gb.

Nop. They create a new unit, the deci-bit (10 deci-bits to 1 bit). So they give you a 10 giga deci-bit per second link and charge you more than a 1 gbps link

I'm not sure how to interpret this.

Are you more or less saying that you may not have enough capacity to service videotron users (like what happened to TSI) in February due to all the new sign-ups?

And fixing it so there is no congestion or slow-downs will only happen around May 1st?

This is what I am understanding from your post.

I didn't read it this way.

From what I had heard, no ISP current needs more than 1gpbs with Videotron. But a couple can see the day when they will. So I suspect there have been talks to see how Videotron would handle that.

Whle the long term solution will be 10gigE, it doesn't prevent an ISP from getting a second 1gbps link between now and then if the need arises.

Whether the install costs for a second gigE that will only be used for a few months are with it, I don't know. Each ISP has to decide if it is worth paying it to acquire customers now that you may not get if you tell them to wait a few months.

We are under capacity right now so don't worry. Our GigE links to Videotron POI is used at around 40% at peak so we expect to have enough capacity to grow for the next 3 months or so.

That is part of the reason why Electronic Box do not offer unlimited on faster speed tier than the 8 Mbits. We want to wait and see the impact before going full throttle.

We already have set a limit at which point we will stop selling no matter what until the upgrade to 10 GE is completed. No point in selling if it start affecting quality !

You might wish to avoid using the word "throttle" on DSLR. On the other hand, it may cause Rogers to start to love you
