Re: Ebox 10 Gbits upgrade for Videotron TPIA said by mlerner:Except now they've only just been given the capability to do unlimited transfer (effectively) and it will be a true test to see if the Videotron nodes can withstand the load since Videotron's own service has been largely capped. This is info from about 2 years ago, but from what was stated Videotron put in new nodes when 60% of it was full. The average node was running one 120-200 people, unlike Rogers who put 400 people on the same node. Something like that.. the info was in the Videotron forum if anyone cares to search for it.
However, 2 years is a long time in telecom years. Things could be very different now. |

 | reply to jfmezei said by jfmezei:For cable, you could rate limit everyone to 8mbps between 20:00 and 23:00 and then let them lose on the speed they paid for for the rest of the day. I wouldn't tolerate signing up to an ISP for cable and then being rate limited because all of a sudden they can't handle what they sold.
Nor should anyone tolerate this.
If this is the direction JP of Ebox is heading to, yet not telling anyone as he signs up more people... then I would be quite vocal about it. As should everyone. It's unacceptable. |

hm @videotron.ca | Some people are saying videotron increased their speeds (speed upgrades) » Maintenant 8.5 mbits ???
This would also kill off any "room to spare" quite quickly as well.
Though in regards to that thread linked to above, I've always had those speeds. Not sure why people are saying it's an upgrade? Maybe they never realized that videotron gives a bit more than what they advertise? Maybe not everyone had those speeds? No clue.
Buy from where I stand there is no upgrade, it's always been above the speeds they sell. |

Buy from where I stand there is no upgrade, it's always been above the speeds they sell. Profiles with Videotron used to be at the rated speed. People weren't getting the advertized speed. Things changed approximately 2-3 years ago I think? As for the thread in the french forum, there was no speed upgrade. Just someone noticing that he now gets the advertized speed. |

| reply to hm Videotron has been adjusting profiles with a 10% margin to compensate for any overhead so customers get the actual advertised speeds.
They've been doing it for a while, I guess older clients had their profile upgraded at some point. |

| For DOCSIS modems, the rate limit should be applied by the modem on the LAN side of things. The modem speaks to the coax at much greater speed. Because it is shared media, you want each packet to take the shortest amount of time on the coax, and that means sending it as fast as possible.
Perhaps Videotron had the rate limit at the portion of the modem that still included the DOCSIS packet headers. |

A few months ago businesses received a letter from Videotron telling us that our speed was going to be increased free of charge to 8.5mbps. At least my business received one...... -- cogito ergo manduc |

Yes, they "upgraded" you by 0.5mbit and removed unlimited on all business tiers. |
