Re: Size of UPS for router, cable modem, phone? said by lordpuffer:When you hook it via USB to a Mac, if you are not home, and the power goes off, the computer will still shut off the way it is supposed to (via the built-in settings in a Mac). Guess what - Windows computers do the same thing!
To the OP: Don't install the APC software. Windows 7 includes the necessary software to shut down the PC just before the battery dies. |

| reply to LazMan said by LazMan:said by John Galt:All of the upstream will be off so it won't work anyway... I don't know about the US - but in Canada; by law any phone service provider (which includes cableco's that do digital voice over cable) have minimum standards to meet - typically between 90 minutes to 4 hours of service during power outages. Upstream in Kentucky must have installed generating capacity with automatic transfer of power if providing telephone service. In addition an inhouse UPS must be provided. We had this arrangement when we had Insight cable and now have it with U-Verse. |

I never said it was specific to a Mac. -- "Is there a 50's Cafe around here"? |

| reply to trparky It's all in the battery capacity. I added an additional 35 AH of battery to my 1500 VA system, took my run time from just over 70 minutes to almost 15 hours.that's running one complete PC computer, feeding 2 24/7 internet radio streams, with cable modem, wireless/wired router, voip ata, cordless phone base. Never had any issues with upstream internet access over any power outage. Only problem was when i used up my 15 hours of backup power 7 hours before the power came back on. That happened twice in two months! The charging system has no problem with it. It just takes longer after a complete discharge to recharge all the way. |

 | reply to Kilroy I would agree with you on this....
I recall speaking to one former Client who spent 10k+ on back up power systems so he could have Internet during power outages. He had an office and servers so I could not fault him for doing so. He called in during a power outage and was rather upset his internet did not work I unfortunately had to advise him that the cable feed he was running off of did not have back up power systems. But I did commend him for safe guarding his systems.
SO.... Please do not be upset kind original poster if you do not have internet during a power outage, as there stands to be a good likely hood that the cable may still be down. And there is only one true way to find out if your spent dollars will be worth trying to shoot for the stars when only the moon is available that is wait for the next power outage and see. |

I disconnected the communications cable and it stopped. I don't know if it depends on settings or on UPS brand. My Tripp Lite UPS appears in my Windows 7 desktop PC as a battery (no additional software installed) and I can see battery charge level on the system tray. When power goes out the machine "switches" to battery power and will hibernate or shutdown exactly like a laptop computer does when you unplug it and the battery drains down. The computer doesn't freak out at all when it goes to battery power. |

So true and I was tinking the same thing when I read the original post. I keep my networking gear (cable modem and router) in a UPS but this is not intended to keep Internet on since cable Internet will go down the moment the power goes out as well. It is intended to keep it going through brief power interruptions which the cable TV system also seems to be able to cope with.
Wen I had DSL it was a different story. I found myself more than once for a while with my computer and DSL modem running off the UPS with service still up. DSL is powered by the central office equipment which has its own backup systems. |

| reply to trparky Browsing through this topic again... I know that this bit is off topic but wanted to comment anyway. A UPS should be used only for "critical" devices. For home use nothing is critical but what I mean is why connect things like a printer or speakers to a UPS? I only have the computer, monitor, cable modem and router. That's it. I don't need speakers or the printer during a power outage. I only need to be able to shutdown normally or survive through brief interruptions. |

I only have my Fast Track Ultra and Pro and 2 pairs of Bose Music Monitor Speakers hooked up to the battery portion of the APC UPS so that I can shut them down properly during a power outage so that no damage can occur. I DON'T have my modem or router hooked up, for it doesn't matter how they lose power. -- "Is there a 50's Cafe around here"? |
