[Northeast] BBU/ONT Box Dead?

Hey all, quick question here.

A couple days ago, internet and TV are working fine, then all go off basically at once. We check the BBU/ONT box and there are zero lights. We call Verizon early next morning, they recommend taking out the battery, waiting 30 seconds, and then reinstalling. We do so: box works! Hooray.

An hour later, the box dies again. I repeat the process and that gives us about 10 minutes of lifetime. Later in the day, we get about 3 minutes and then a minute of life before the box dies out.

To be clear: When the box dies, the whole thing goes down. Not a single light is left on, red or green.

Clearly we're getting less returns each time. I imagine the battery just needs to be replaced to get this whole thing working again, but I have a slight nagging concern that won't do it. Can you all advise?

Thanks for any help!

Could be a combo of a bad BBU and a bad power supply. Just get a tech to come out.

Battery for the back up unit is ready to be replaced. Sounds like the battery can't hold charge anymore. How is the battery back up wired? Is it wired just through a wall outlet, or is there a wire that has been pulled to the electric meter to the battery back up unit?

From what I remember (not home currently) there is a single connection to a wall outlet. But I didn't examine closely, it's possible it's wired out somewhere as I do live in a garden apartment building.

Just have a tech come out and fix it. It will be much faster. You have a hardware issue, things need replacing.

faze, while that would be easier, it is neither cheaper nor faster. If I can solve this with a $30 battery from Radio Shack tonight, then I think that's the best plan.

I thought tech visits were free?

Why is he saying it wouldn't be cheaper?

Battery is your responsibility after x amount of days. I think its 90

Many posters on the Verizon forum confirmed that Verizon will only freely replace it up to a year. My presumption is that after that, they will charge you for a new battery and any installation fees that go along with that.

Plus, you know, it'd be so much faster to grab a battery on the way home and be done with this by 6pm tonight.

Well give it a try and report back!

You need a tech visit. A dead battery should not cause a no service condition as long as the BBU is plugged in. You have a defective BBU which needs to be replaced.

I'll second that. All you have been doing is draining the battery a little more each time you have repowered it. Have a tech come out and replace the BBU and leave the battery to charge after that. It most likely won't need a new battery.

@cox.net

Well the jokes on me--can't find any Radio Shacks with a battery to sell me! I'll see about setting up an appointment. Thanks for the advice all.

No problem, and I suggest doing what Acc708 suggested. Chances are, that battery will be harder to get than you think.

I would first check your outlet. A dead battery will not kill the ONT as long as it is plugged in. You have a dead outlet or a dead ONT.

Had the same thing happen. Turned out it was a bad BBU. I had replaced the battery. Lasted for about six hours, then the same thing. They tech said he replaced at least two BBUs that day alone. It seems that there was a bad batch of them. You should be able to pull the battery and the ONT will stay up.

You need a truck roll.
