[Qwest] Issues with Qwest/CenturyLink DSL install

Long story short, my wife and I got a self-install kit for CenturyLink DSL internet service. We followed the instructions and get a "DSL" light on the modem, which indicates a connection to the Q/CL servers, but no "Internet" light, which indicates the servers can't authenticate us, apparently. Unplug the line, DSL light starts flashing and the modem setup screen (192.168.0.1) goes red and says "Connecting". Plug it in, and the light goes solid and the screen says "connected". That means I'm getting a signal from the Q/CL servers, if I understand correctly.

Now, I'm not a n00b. Not a networking tech either, but I know my stuff. At this point, I'm not gonna sit for them to tell me I've been power-cycling my modem wrong for the past week. Connections are good, I even inspected the wiring on the phone jack to make sure. Numerous calls to tech support have resulted in answers like "narrow outage in your area" to "wait 12 hours for your account to activate." Now the tune is, "Our servers don't see a connection from your modem (!?), so we need to send a technician out." Conveniently, if they find any problems with our side (cabling, modem settings, etc), it's $85. Sounds fishy to me.

I'd like some advice, anything else I can try to make this work. I've played with most of the modem settings a bit (always after a factory reset), but networking isn't my strong point and I'm not sure where to start or what other issues could be to blame. Modem is a Zyxel PK5000Z.

I had a similar issue with my install (solid green DSL light, no internet light). Turned out it was an issue with my account profile on their end. Keep calling back until you get a person who knows what they're doing, or shoot an email off to TalkToUs@CenturyLink.com (small team of managers who browse this forum - they can get stuff done) and include your service address.

You are most likely in an area that uses PPPoE authentication. You will need to call and get your PPPoE UserName and PassWord. You will either enter this in the modem, or put the modem in bridge mode and enter it in the router.
