3 edits | [Voip.ms] Do not get busy signal when number called is busy Hello,
I am tring to call various numbers in the Bell network, but when the numbers called are actually busy, I do not get the busy signal, but it keeps ringing. When those numbers are free, all is normal - they answer my call. (I tried this with two numbers, one in Montreal one in Quebec City.)
The dial plan I use is the 7-digit NA plan suggested by Mango: ( [23456789]11 | *xxx. | [2-9]xxxxxxS0 | 1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0 | 011xxxxxx. | [#*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x][*x]. )
I am using a PAP2T adapter. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks in advance. |

 | This is likely a problem with 'early media' not being handled correctly, but we need to see whether it is at your end or at VoIP.ms.
Try calling 1-408-269-1999 (you should hear a busy signal) and also 1-800-426-7378 (you should hear "Thank you for calling IBM ..."). If these just play ringback tone, post make and model information for your modem and router. If they operate correctly, are either of your problematic numbers suitable for testing (is there a time when they could be called, which is certain not to disturb someone)? |

 | reply to flori19688 Are you using "value" routes? If so, have you tried Premium? |

Hi Stewart, I called the two numbers you indicated, and I get the busy signal from the first, IBM welcome message from the second, so I guess we can rule my side out (for what it's worth, modem is Speedtouch ST546 v6, with firmware 6.2.16.3, router is Netgear WGT624 v4 with firmware 2.0.13_2.0.15NA).

Hi ctarano, indeed I was using the "value" route for Canada/USA; I changed to "premium" and now I get busy signal when number called is busy, ringing when line is not busy (tried calling the same two numbers of yesterday).
Kind of sucks though, to have to use premium only to make sure the call is routed correctly. By your knowledge, do you think it is a common issue with value routes with IP telephony in general, or specific to voip.ms ?
Thanks to both of you for your help. |

 | In reading what voip.ms writes about value vs. premium, value route guarantee nothing and it's the cheapest providers they can find. Even Caller ID isn't guaranteed. But the connection should go through fine for normal calls.
For the small price difference (0.0105 vs 0.0125), I just use Premium. The WAF is most important and I want things to just work.
It would be my guess that the "value" providers (like voipo and other fixed rate providers) use value routes exclusively and only override them when customers complain. I am also a voipo customer and have noticed certain numbers that don't work properly. They reply with "we changed your route". So I assume value to premium for that one number.

| Hi Craig,
I agree, the saving for using value route is not huge (here in Canada the value route is 0.5 c/min, but however 1.25 c/min is not enormous), and certainly (although the value route works generally ok) the saving is not worth the trouble to find out what is going on when there are hiccups.
Thanks again for your help.
