[TWC] Broadband Extreme (30/5) w/SB5101 Modem?

Current service: Road Runner Broadband Turbo (20/2) with PowerBoost (I'm using my own Motorola SB5101 modem).

If I upgrade to the Road Runner Broadband Extreme (30/5), is this compatible with my current Motorola SB5101 modem,
or would this require a new docsis 3.0 modem?

Thanks for the advice!

You will need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem; this is because Extreme and Wideband require channel-bonding to work properly.

What happens is if you try to upgrade to extreme with a DOCSIS 2.0 modem is that you get bumped down a speed tier or so depending on what you are on. I tried it already early last year. But as the other guy said you need a DOCSIS 3 modem for it work as those modems offer the ability to bond channels whereas the older ones only utilize a single channel.

Is there a list of compatible DOCSIS 3.0 modem approved by TWC? Was thinking of buying one (non-wireless) to use rather than renting.

Most markets don't allow you to use your own modem on DOCSIS 3 services. Also TWC doesnt have a modem rental fee, that was integrated into the monthly price i think some 8 years ago or so. Besides you can always turn off the wifi in their stuff and use bridge mode so its just like having a modem without the router in it.

Some markets though use the motorola SBG6580 and others use the UBEE DDW3611 i think it is. Also there is the eMTA version of the ubee the DVW3201B. Both UBEEs are the same except one has a battery in it for the phone portion.

The ARRIS 852 model EMTA is replacing the Ubee eMTA and the SBG6580 is replacing the UBEE D3.0 modems seems that even austin texas a system that started off with ubee's is now giving out SBG6580s I asume that once all of the ubees are distributed to customers they will only give recycled Ubees or SBG6580s or the Arris EMTA for new Extreme or wideband installs. I am asuming this is due to customers complaining about the size of the UBEE devices being way too big.

seems the ubees may go te way of the SMC routers that TWC had in NYC.

I was able to use my SB5101 with 30/5. Only problem I had was the upload speed capped at 2.5mbps. When I switched to the SB6121 Docsis 3.0 I received the full 30/5. However the lights on the modem only light up green and not blue for bonded. So I wonder if the 30/5 service is actually not bonded.

You should be able to go to the modem config pages to see if the downstream is bonded or not. I dont think TW does upstream bonding yet though.

Time Warner Cable is charging a $2.50modem rental fee in the NYC area as of March 16, I believe, (for new customers).
