NBomb join:2007-01-23 Etobicoke, ON | How to use 25/7 to cut cable TV? Hey all,
I'm going to be upgrading my parents' DSL to Tek's 25/7 package, and I also want to try to get them to drop their $100/month cable habit.
I know that getting an OTA antenna is one avenue, but what other ways are there that I can use the new speedy internet connection to digitally bridge that gap of missing channels for them? My mother in particular refuses to be without HGTV.
Thanks! |

Are there any set-top boxes that'll accomplish this? I dunno that they want a PC sitting near their TV. |

| reply to NBomb What does your mom watch on HGTV. Really popular shows are relatively easy to get to with the right set-up but depending on what your mom likes they're may not be any good options that are a good replacement for the cable / sat feed that you currently use. For example some of the shows might only be available on their website at a lower quality and really enjoyable sitting at a computer, not the TV for example. If your mom just likes to have HGTV on in the background while she goes about her day you might be really cramping her style. Pretty much the only set-top box that is as trouble free as cable TV is Cable TV (or sat).
Option B is figure out if you can scale back the TV packages and supplement with internet. That's basically what I did with my wife. We scaled back the cable and used more of the internet options..... to get used to that and work out the kinks and then we cancelled it completely. I'm actually a bit of an oddball and do dvd/blu-ray by mail as well. (I use dvdlinks.ca some people also like zip.ca )
Be honest now.... Is the 25/7 DSL for your parents.... or is it for you? |

Totally replaces cable/satellite TV |

 | reply to NBomb I second the Boxee nomination,
My wife is technically challenged and she is able to navigate with it without issue |

I just want to save them some money, since they barely use what they're paying for.
Thanks for all the recommendations, guys - how does an unlocked ATV compare to a Boxee Box? |

 | reply to unpluggedd I just did this. With unblock-us you also get Hulu, which includes HGTV (»www.hulu.com/network/hgtv?sort=name). After 5 days on the free trials for unblock-us and netflix I cancelled my cable. |

 | [Edit]: nm, replied in correct thread. How do I delete this? |

 | reply to Sanek Netflix and Hulu on max quality/HD work perfectly. This service is not a VPN, it doesn't route all the data through their servers. From what I understand, it just uses their servers for the initial connection to it looks like you're connecting from the US but the actual video data is streamed directly from Netflix/Hulu to your computer. This way they (Unblock-Us) doesn't need much bandwidth, has low costs, and doesn't cost you much (~$5/month, little bit less if you sign up for 1 year). In fact your computer will only connect through their service for certain websites. So eg. when I'm on Netflix or Hulu it looks like I'm in the US but when I'm on dslreports it still shows Canada. You can set it up on your router if you want it to work for all the computers on your network, for me, I just set it up on the one computer connected to the TV in my living room. |
|
 | Also on Unblock us it will show you how you can use a prepaid visa card to sign up for Hulu Plus
I got a Roku box 1st gen from Ebay and I have both netflix and Hulu plus, in order to activate the Roku you need a US address but that's easy
Plus you can enjoy Pandora if you like streaming music

Thank you very much, will definitely look into this further. Was very disappointed with the lack of content for Netflix Canada compared to Netflix US, hopefully this is the solution.
$5/month is nothing, so if the service works properly, this is definitely quite nice. I'm curious if they will eventually get closed down or banned though for bypassing all these checks... |

Are there any set-top boxes that'll accomplish this? I dunno that they want a PC sitting near their TV. My recommendation is that you don't have them drop cable. The key words here are "if they have problems, those become my problems." The simple fact of the matter is that using bittorrent is not as easy as flipping on the TV and tuning to a channel. Sure, appleTV and Boxee and Roku are all good alternatives, but you have to make sure your parents are going to be satisfied with them.
Don't just cut the cord without making sure their needs are fulfilled. Otherwise, you are going to be fielding calls and complaints. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

| reply to NBomb Unless the $100/month they pay is really a hardship, you're probably not doing your parents any favors. Some people like to relax and enjoy what a station hurls at them from afar without any fuss.
Boxee might make a good supplement. Maybe you can use it to help them get away with a cheaper cable plan. -- AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011 Rethink Billable.

Thanks! In addition to OTA, there's also FTA C or Ku band satellite which offers specialty and international channels. On Ku band FTA which uses a medium sized dish, Create TV is a very good substitute for HGTV and it's FREE! If they still want HGTV regardless, you may subscribe to it on HITS TV. Their smallest package that includes HGTV is the Pik 10 Pak which allows you to pick 10 channels for about $22 per month + tax. |
