[WIN7] Problems Installing Software from CD/DVD

I've been having a very weird problem on my Win 7 64-bit machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After a fresh reinstall of Win 7, there are no issues. I can put in an installation disc and install software normally. However, after I install some of the Windows Updates (not sure which one is causing problems as it would take a very long time testing them one by one), I have problems running setup.exe files on CD's and DVD's.

When prompted by User Access Control if I want the software to make changes, it says that the publisher is "Unknown". For example, after a fresh install of Windows 7, I was able to install Star Wars: ToR just fine. However, after installing the Windows Updates, when I put the install disc in, it comes up with the Unknown publisher. If I continue, I get the message "The procedure entry point CieckDlgButton could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll." It looks like "CieckDlgButton" should be "CheckDlgButton", and that is causing the problem.

I was able to install Quicken 2009 that I had saved on a CD-ROM BEFORE I ran Windows Update. After installing several updates, when I put the disc in, I get a similar warning about an unknown publisher, and then I get a similar error to the one above where there is an apparent "typo".

Even weirder is that if I copy the files to my hard drive and try to run the setup.exe file, I still get the problem. However, it I copy the files to a NAS device on my network using a different computer, then run the install from there (or copy to my local HD), it works with the correct publisher displayed!

I have gone through three installs of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and three different DVD-ROM drives. I have also replaced the IDE cable, even though this seems to be a software/driver issue and not a hardware issue.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I am going out of my mind. I am up and running now, but I am unable to install software from CD/DVD's. I don't know if it will fix the issue, but I ordered a new DVD-ROM and DVD burner, both SATA. I am hoping that the issue has to do with my mobo (Asus P6t Deluxe v2) and the IDE controller.

The bottom line is that once I install a certain update from Windows Update, I lose the ability to run installation files from a CD or DVD disc.

I see there is a Microsoft Fix it which may, or may not, be of some help:

Diagnose and fix program installing and uninstalling problems automatically

Automatically diagnoses problems that can prevent installing and uninstalling programs on your computer. Assists with programs that will not uninstall correctly and programs blocking installation of new program installations.

What it fixes...

•Removes bad registry key on 64 bit operating systems.
•Windows registry keys that control the upgrade (patching) data that become corrupted.
•Resolves problems that prevent new programs from being installed.
•Resolves problems that prevent programs from being completely uninstalled and blocking new installations and updates.
•Use this troubleshooter for an uninstall only if the program fails to uninstall using the windows add/remove programs feature.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no problems were detected when I ran that tool.

In case anyone was wondering...

I replaced my CD/DVD-ROM drives with SATA ones, and the problem is gone. I can now install software from CD/DVD's again.

I am more upset about the time and aggravation than I am about the $45 it cost me. I am going to chalk this up to a driver issue with the IDE controller on the mobo and not waste any additional time thinking about it.
