[Eastern Ontario] Usage Meter

Hey, so what do I do if the meter runs so high every day (inaccurately) that it costs me extra in fees? Is there anyway to verify my usage? I am looking at an extra $20 right now, would like to avoid it.

Your best bet is using a router with a custom firmware distribution that tracks bandwidth usage (DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato are examples of such), that way you can monitor the bandwidth usage across all the devices on your network.

Unfortunately since you're already taking the charge there might not be much you can do - bandwidth meters only start when you initially install the firmware. You could call them up and complain and they may issue a "one-time credit" as a show of "good faith", which I've heard has worked in the past, but it's much easier when you can say "my router says x GB of usage, why is yours so much higher?"

Keep in mind, your router logs and $1.47 will get you a large double-double. Logs mean shit to Cogeco or any company charging for usage. It's their logs, and that's it, pay up.

But as you mentioned, I'd rather have them than not in a dispute.

Anyone not monitoring their own uage via a router is asking for trouble.

Yeah their logs, less accurate than using a goddamn Ouija board and a bottle of Scotch!

Yeah its the only thing will help when they pull one of their "Oops we didn't update the meter for five days, here it is all at once!"

It MAY depend upon the grade of Scotch.

Definitely true, but it beats having nothing. If they really argued my own logs I'd offer Cogeco to submit a bug report or better yet a patch to the Linux kernel maintainers so that they can fix the glaring bug in the kernel!

Hmmm. Care to elaborate on what that bug is and how it affects this discussion... exactly?

Mike

All third party firmwares and some official firmware as well (think Netgear, Linksys) are just Linux distributions for routers, and the bandwidth monitoring components simply pretty up the I/O traffic as reported by the running kernel into nice charts and graphs and what have you. Therefore, if Cogeco's meter is so correct and my method of measuring is "inaccurate" then there must be some kind of massive Linux kernel bug that causes everyone's bandwidth monitoring to be inaccurate!

Hah, I probably could've been more clear in my original post.
