1 edit | They're not letting you skip because according to them they've "detected unusual activity on your account."
Did you try clicking the link to 'learn more about your support options' to see if there are any alternatives there?
*Edit- I imagine you might just be screwed on this one:
»support.google.com/mail/bin/answ···r=114129 »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_mai···e_number
I know I have two G-Mail accounts and a YouTube account. I sometimes get the 'skip' option when signing in, other times it just goes straight to the account. Then again, I've never been told they're 'detecting unusual activity', either.
I know this, too: The minute I'm ever unable to sign into any account without giving up a phone number is the same minute that account becomes abandoned. The YouTube account is just for S&G, and the G-Mail accounts were created as throwaways anyway. |

 | well i was checking my mail and i send a few mails out, then i tried to log in to youtube and i could not, then i tried to log back in to my gmail account and i could not... so i don't understand how they detected "unusual activity"... this bothers me and i will provide a phone number that is not mine to get back in... not that i am hiding something, i am just feeling OBLIGATED to provide it when i have a right to not.... i will not provide my own :P... it is just a matter of the principal of the matter.
also, i read some where that google was going to do some mandatory none-opt out changing... don't know if this is one of them though... i am just confused. |

 | BTW, i did click on the 'learn more about your support options' and there are no alternatives. |

If Gmail detected mail sent to everyone in your addressbook or every address in your sent folder, that might indicate a problem.

"Verify by telephone" security measures send a unique number to your mobile phone or you call a number from the given number to receive a unique number you must then enter on the website.
A false number may lock your account permanently. |
