Re: [CenturyTel] Modem without Router

your Actiontec GT784WN should work fine, try to remember to take your quick start guide to configure for "all other service providers". You can supply your own DSL modem.

Regarding the Actiontec GT784WMN...mine would run through autosetup and then indicate the process failed and at that point it wouldn't get a DSL connection. I ended up manually changing the settings to DHCP, VPI =8 and VCI =35 and and it then worked (for awhile). I've had two of these units and used them as a modem and wireless router. Each worked fine for a week or two then they started dropping the DSL connection. At first it was sporadic and then it got to the point where it was an every other hour thing.
I don't believe I missed any kind of setting change that would have allowed the actiontecs to be more stable so I returned the second one too.

Be aware that unlike Cable Modems, once an ADSL modem is placed in the bridged mode it is impossible to access the modems web pages. In order to recover access the web pages one must reset the modem to factory defaults using the reset button and procedure. I found that both units perform as well as the CenturyLink rental modem. I signed up for 10Mbps down and 768Kbps up. During off peak hours with all three units, I get 10+Mbps down and 760Kbps up.

Yep, that has been my ongoing problem with my zyxel 660. The modem works fantastic compared to the combo modem/wireless routers I've bought and returned because they'd drop the dsl connection too frequently.

The 660 is ultra-stable but when I go to bridge mode and use it with my wireless router I cant access the modem settings from my browser. I've tried a few things but no luck. I've googled the topic looking for some step by step instructions but no luck with that either. Most comments I've seen on the web either haven't worked or aren't detailed enough for me to even try to set up.

If you have a separate standard wireless router without DSL Modem, you can use it as an access point. I have successfully done so. Leave the ADSL Modem in the Router Mode and disconnect it from the wireless router's WAN port. Change the IP address of the wireless router to a value outside of the range of the DHCP server in the ADSL Modem. Turn off or disable the DHCP server in the wireless router. If the Gateway address of the ADSL Modem is 192.168.1.1 then set the IP address of the wireless router to say 192.168.1.254. Connect the LAN port on the ADSL Modem to one of the LAN ports on the wireless router. The wireless router can serve as a four port switch as well as an access point. So you can use the other three LAN ports to connect other hardwired network devices. DO NOT CONNECT ANYTHING TO THE WAN PORT ON THE WIRELESS ROUTER. NOTE IF THE DHCP SERVER IN THE WIRELESS ROUTER IS OFF THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO IT IS TO HAVE THE ADSL MODEM CONNECTED TO A LAN PORT ON THE WIRELESS ROUTER. Netgear has an explanation of how to use one of their wireless routers as an access point here:
»support.netgear.com/app/answers/···%20point
Be aware that Netgear's example shows a separate wired router and broadband modem. In this case the broadband modem and wired router are combined.

This configuration will allow you to access all of the ADSL modems web pages. Log into the wireless router at whatever IP address you set for it. In this example 192.168.1.254. You can then set up the wireless network.

Mr Matt, thanks for the detailed instructions and link to the netgear page. I sat down last night to set up my medialink wireless-n router to my 660 modem. Up until this point, every combination I tried had the modem in bridge mode. Before trying your suggestion and plugging the cable from the modem into one of the lan connections of the router I tried another route.

I didn't set the modem to bridge modem and then simply gave my wireless router a different IP than the modem and it works fine. I can see the settings page for the modem and the wireless router.

There's a downside though that I've not gotten around and not sure there's a way to fix this situation when the modems not in bridge mode. When I set up port forwarding on the wireless router and my pc I've not been able to get port forwarding to work for soulseek (P2P client). In the router's port forward setting I'm showing the IP address for my pc which I got from running IPCONFIG. When setting up an IP on the TCP/IP setting on my PC I'm using that same PC IP address.

Bridge mode is used to avoid that problem. You are going through two routers. You can port forward all you want in your router, but it is being stopped by the firewall in the modem. Log into the modem and see if there is a DMZ spot where you can enter the address for your router (WAN address if cable from modem is connected to WAN port). If cable from modem is connected to a LAN port, you have to use the modem's router to do port forwarding. If not, you will have to put the modem in bridge mode to get the port forwarding to work.

If the wireless router is configured to be a access point it cannot forward ports
You need to forward the ports using the modems gui
