| CableCard Self Install Success I picked up a new Tivo Premiere XL to replace the Tivo HD I had in my living room. I just got a new 60" TV and the guide on the older Tivo looked awful blown up that big. I had read online that the Tivo Premiere was pushing out an all new HD guide, so I made the plunge.
I ordered the new Tivo, and my wife went to the local Verizon store to pick up a new CableCard M-Type. My old Tivo HD still had two S-Type cards, the new Premiere only has one slot and needs the M-Type.
I transferred any shows off the old Tivo to my computer upstairs, and disconnected the old unit. I then installed the new Tivo in its place. I did the normal setup of the Tivo and got it ready for the CableCard activation. For those that are wondering, I installed the CableCard before I plugged the whole thing in, I wasn't sure if I needed to wait to install the card or not (Like a USB printer on a computer). Since it didn't say on the instructions NOT to install it, I went ahead and put it in right away.
The Tivo took almost an hour to get setup and on my network. I had a few channels that even worked right away.
I then activated the CableCard. I went to »www22.verizon.com/fiostv/selfinstall/ and entered the activation number the people in the Fios store gave my wife, along with my zip code. It took a good 35-40 minutes for it to activate, but it worked the first time. No issues at all. Remember the days when the tech had to come and put the card in, and spend 2-3 hours on the phone getting the back office people to get it working? That is gone.
All my channels worked right away. I did have to turn on all my premium channels in the Tivo setup so they would show in my guide.....but they all worked.
I then forced the Tivo to connect to the Tivo service. This caused the Tivo to download the newest firmware and the new HD interface. It took maybe 15-20 minutes to download on my connection (50 download). it then reset the Tivo and it said on screen that the update would take an hour......they were not kidding. Just short of an hour it was done. But I was disappointed, no new HD menus.....it all looked the same.
I did a quick search and found that you have to enable the HD menus in the Video settings section of the Tivo.
It has been about 36 hours and all is working well. Tivo has started recording our shows, and I moved a bunch of shows back to the Tivo from the network.
I have to say, Verizon got it right, finally, with the CableCard installs. |
