Wily_OnePremium join:2002-11-24 San Jose, CA | PDF reader that's not Adobe Got a new build, and I want to avoid Adobe as much as possible. What's the best fully-functional PDF reader that's also free?
I have searched the forum and some like Sumatra, but if I'm reading it right you can't print from it. Bzzzzt Next!
Others I have seen talk about Foxit. Looks like there are some plug-ins for this I would want, but also some I do not want. Can individual plug-ins be installed at-will?
Don't need anything fancy, just be able to read any valid PDF file, copy from it, and print from it if I want. Thanks! |

 | reply to Wily_One You can print from Sumatra PDF. Wherever you read that you couldn't, is wrong. -- Scott Brown Consulting |

 | reply to Wily_One I generally use Foxit, but I also use Sumatra as a [sort of] quick viewer from a file manager. Both offer portable versions (as do, I think, most of the readers), so they aren't mutually exclusive. -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |

| reply to Wily_One Another vote for Nitro. I had been using Foxit, and tried PDF Xchange, but after reading recommendations here downloaded Nitro and gave it a run. I've replaced all the others now.
Something Nitro offers that I've not seen in any others is the ability to create PDF files -- and that's important to me since I use them to send proof copies of print material to my associates. I had been using PDF995, also free, but it created files almost 20 times larger than those from Nitro. Every other free PDF writing program I tried was in the same ballpark as PDF995. Nitro, however, offers a number of options when creating files, and was able to output very compact ones.
The only "down" factor I've found is that it's slower to load than some of the other free readers, but the better performance more than outweighs that for my use... -- Jim Kyle |

PDF XChange Viewer does pretty much everything you would want in a PDF reader. +1 The only issue i had with PDF Xchange is that opening a PDF inside IE it would some times hang. |

Re: PDF reader that's not Adobe I appreciate all the replies, but would really like to hear more feedback. Tell me why your choice is better than the others.
Compatibility is the most important to me, and speed would be a concern if something was really dog slow. I just want it to work without hassle.
Thanks! |

I used to use PDF XChange Viewer. I liked it at first, then had a lot problems with it. I just read here, in another thread, that it now installs ASK toolbar if you are not really careful. Before it I used Foxit but it got too bloated. I have also tried Sumatra.
I like Evince for Windows best. It is a simple reader so if you want bells and whistles then it might not be for you. It has been a really nice reader for me with ONE exception. The current version I cannot use because Samsung's TV help manual crashes it immediately upon loading. I had to go back to the version prior to the current one. Prior version 2.30.0 works fine with Samsung manuals. I use the reader A LOT so it is strange that only this ONE MANUAL crashes the reader. So, if you don't have a Samsung TV, try Evince for Windows. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

Thanks! The links I provided should tell you more than enough about Nitro, as for why I like it, It boils down to personal preference. So I could no more state what would be "better" for you than anyone else here, It's something you will have to decide for yourself. Try them all, then come back and let us know why you chose the one you did. |
