 | Bell Bringing "high-speed" to Peterborough Bell Aliant joins Eastern Ontario broadband project »www.cartt.ca/news/13102/Cable-Te···ect.html
Bell Aliant has won a local access contract to provide more than 24,000 homes and businesses improved access to high-speed Internet in portions of a 2,700 square-kilometre area in Ontarios Haliburton and Peterborough Counties.
Awarded by the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus (EOWC), the contract will see Bell Aliant lay 121 kilometres of new fibre optic cable and rely on eight new points of presence within the region to expand broadband access. Satellite services will provide the balance of high-speed coverage in the area.
"We are making excellent progress in building a new regional network that will allow our residents and businesses to prosper," said Dave Burton, chair of Eastern Ontario Regional Network Inc., a not-for-profit organization established by the EOWC to manage all contracts awarded as part of the project. "Connecting to the Internet with higher speeds will open new doors for our communities in terms of quality of life and economic growth." ... continues...
I wonder if they are crossing into Nexicom's territory Both wired and wireless?
I'm also kind of surprised it got awarded to Bell instead of a local boy? Did Nexicom not apply for this project? Something tells me that I seem to recall them speaking of this a few years back.
I'd love to hear any input from Nexicom. |

I'd love to hear any input from Nexicom. There was an open RFP for all the elements in the EORN/EOWC projects. Bell Aliant won the backbone contract. Barrett Xplore won the sat. and some terrestrial access contracts. Bell Aliant has clearly won the terrestrial access contract for the Peterborough region.
The terrestrial fixed wifi for the municipalities of Nation and Russell is now live. That zone of covered by Xplorenet. The project is funded by EOWC as well as the provincial and federal gov't. |

"Yay" for them. Now they will be able to order Fib7 packages attractively priced at 79.99 with a 25 GB cap or something like that. Bell should be treated like a sex offender when it comes to the internet. Nobody should let them even close. |

(Yes there is a difference) |

 | reply to alienzzz More like 170/30 uncapped with no throttle for less than what the average sucker in southern Ontario pays for basic internet service. They could offer higher speeds like gigabit connections for something like $49.95 a month since the people in Ontario have money. |

Bell Aliant in Ontario and Quebec is owned by Bell Aliant. But it is operated by Bell Canada and not independent in any way from the urban properties of Bell Canada, except they probably won't spend much money on upgrades there. All of the pricing, features, websites, etc. is aligned with Bell Canada, not Aliant.
I am surprised that the coverage will be wired and not fixed wireless or LTE/HSPA+ provided by Bell Mobility. So perhaps there could be FTTH, but I believe that copper/dsl is more likely. |

 | said by mlerner:If it was Bell Canada it would not be a wired deployment. But you'd think if it was rural FTTH there would be a bunch of press stuff floating around. So DSL it is until we hear otherwise.
Either way, a load of "meh". Aliant's central/remote properties will languish while capital if focused on FTTH in the maritimes. |
