 | [Voip.ms] chicago server down? Both my lines are down, can't ping chicago.voip.ms. The newyork server pings fine.
I'd switch, but IVR recordings are not on all servers...

 2 edits | reply to ctaranto Let's hope this is a very infrequent hiccup. My number ported this morning to voip.ms and now we don't have phones. 
Moved to newyork and back online. Requested IVR recordings be moved to newyork.. Ugh.
Update: I was apparently confused between IVR and voicemail. IVR is available on all servers. Voicemail isn't (but since it's day 1 for me, I didn't have any). |

| reply to ctaranto I felt this outage in a big way. One of my clients came in to work this morning and her phones were all dead. I had to remotely switch the phones over to a different server, but since voicemail was all stored on the Chicago server she couldn't access it until the server came back up.
It was fixed within 30 minutes--but this is the sort of thing that should have been fixed within 30 seconds. VoIP.ms should keep a closer eye on their servers. |

| Well, I suppose that's one disadvantage of having remote servers in many different cities....
I think that Voip.MS is a fine provider with dedicated staff and many advanced features, but to me having a large number of servers in different places (tended to by someone else's employees) is a disadvantage. |

Uptime appears to be important to you, and yet you ignored that for some features (ie, voicemail) there are single points of failure. They're pretty clear about it in their documentation: »wiki.voip.ms/article/Voicemail
Since they charge $0.00 for voicemail, I'm sure you can get a 100% SLA credit. |

While it's been mostly perfect over the past six months, I've experienced workday quality issues (sudden one-way or jitter symptoms, call drops, incoming failing-over) that I just don't get with their Houston or Dallas servers- which I used prior over the past 2+ years I've used voip.ms.
Not sure why, it could be occasional funky routing on my ISP's end (Comcast) rather than anything with the Chicago datacenter, but I seem to get better results with the servers down south. -- Jeff Howe Jeff's Blog - »www.ostjournal.net |

While voicemail and other features may have been out for a period of time, registrations should have been moved to a different server without any intervention from the end user.
And quite frankly, IVR's and voicemails should be stored on two different servers at all times in case of just this type of outage. |

It doesn't matter if your servers are in different countries or right beside each other; if there's no failover, ain't nothin' gonna be failin' over

I hear you, but how many threads about this or that server down with this provider do we need? Toronto, US3... This seems like a "feature" of voip.ms. Maybe they should add "You have to change servers on an irregular basis" to their list of "benefits." |

Traditional POTS service was easy -- you plugged in your phone and the phone company had to meet regulatory requirements for uptime. VoIP has no such regulation, and you have to do your homework to make an estimation about what your uptime might be.
All that said, anyone who thinks there is a service out there that is completely free of outages is setting themselves up to be bitch slapped by the cold hand of reality. On a long enough timeline, everything made by humans will fail. |
