Old Dell - BIOS Password Woes

Got an old Dell circa 2006. Removed the cmos battery overnight, installed this morning, still wants password and the usual suspects dont work Dell, admin and calvin.
Now when I type letters (USB logitech keyboard) no letters or stars show up on the screen. However when I hit the return key the computer blinks and says wrong password. I note that F2 and F12 do not seem to work no matter what I do.

Thus I have two questions.
Will I have success with any USB keyboard (I can still get at the original dell usb keyboard) ie get F2 and F12 or password text working...

Second, why did the cmos batter removal not fix the request for bios password?????

There is usually a jumper on the motherboard that you can move to fix this issue.

Usually removing the cmos battery will work if you power on the computer 1-time with the battery still out.. unless it is a laptop-
in which case call Dell.

First off, get a PS/2 style keyboard... Many machines around that vintage, USB keyboards were hit and miss for BIOS/CMOS access... Doesn't have to be a Dell branded one, any PS/2 keyboard should be fine.

Secondly, wrt to the password - if it's a BIOS password, there may be a jumper or two pads that need to be shorted; or you may need a master password from Dell to clear it; depending on the model of machine you're working on. The CMOS clear won't do it, either way.

There are tools out "there" that can calculate the reset password based on the machines serial # and service tag... Google's your friend. I have no idea how they work; as back when I was a Dell warranty tech, I had access to the actual Dell database...

okay sorted out the model number, found the password and cmso rest jumpers and will give that a go. Finding a ps2 keyboard may be harder to get than the original dell usb keyboard. I dont think there are ps2 connections on the thing and would need a ps2 to usb connector lOL.

If the PC is new enough that it doesn't have ps/2 connectors, then the USB keyboard will be just fine...
