Re: [Servers] Building and configuring a server

Correct. Like I said, we already do that x2. Whether that's enough memory for you to serve everything you want to serve, I don't know. Such as if you were streaming two video files simultaneously for viewing.

Just wondering, does anyone remember any old servers that they might have worked with in the past that might have been similar to my build?
What was operating system and does anyone remember the hardware of that server?
I know there was the Novell Netware (before Netware 6), NT 3.x, NT 3.51, NT 4.

I dual booted FreeBSD on a Pentium 166Mhz desktop back in the mid 90s. Unix kernels are very forgiving about old hardware compatibility and degrade very well. You'll be fine.

I run my DNS servers on CentOS. I'm using the latest (5.7) version. The systems run dual Pentium III CPU's (600mhz) with 512mb RAM, on Asus P2B-DS mainboards.

Your system should run FreeNAS without any issues.

pfSense would replace your existing router. If you have a good one, it would probably be best to continue using it.

If I do want to give pfSense a try and I have 4 NIC's, how would I connect them to the network?
Something like this?
NIC 1 - WAN - cable modem
NIC 2 - LAN1 - device 1
NIC 3 - LAN2 - device 2
NIC 4 - LAN3 - device 3
Is it possable to have 2 routers going at the same time, say a pfSense system and a normal router? Also could I make these types of connections?
pfSense -> router
WAN -> LAN 1
Would DHCP have to be on or off to connect this way if it's even possable?

As for FreeNAS it runs great, thanks for sugesting it.
But I can't seem to get the UPnP/DLNA server to work with my bluray player. Only DLNA server that it can see on the network is 'ReadyDLNA:WNDR3700' and that runs MiniDLNA version 1.0.18. Could I run that program on my FreeNAS server by installing that package?

You do it with 2 NICs and use a dumb switch downstream for more ports.

I have tons of spare NIC's. Some are ISA bus and Some are PCI, I might even have an old 3com ELink 3 10Mbps. lol
Oh and what is a 'dumb switch' and how can I set one up?

I have tried out both FreeNAS 7x and FreeNAS 8x, version 8 is a bit slow on my old machine and it has some 'script errors' and version 7 seems to run quick and smooth with no errors on IE8. I like how the powerd deamon throttles down the CPU from 1008Mhz down to 500Mhz when it runs idle. But the only problem I have with it is when it 'shutsdown' it won't turn off my power supply (and yes it is an ATX power supply and motherboard).

Each NIC would need to be on a different subnet. Only one NIC can have a default gateway. The server would have to expressely handle all the routing. 2 NICs, one to internet, one to internal network. Cheap, basic switch.

It looks like you just have a bunch of parts that you want to use, and very little knowledge of computers and infrastructure. Ask us, and take our advice. They are a lot of folks here that do this for a living.

By "dumb switch" I meant a cheap, unmanaged device operating at layer 3 only and not backed by software or doing any processing.
