Leveraging DOCSIS 3.0

I've been experiencing intermittent outages for the last 2 months now.

After a service call resulted in a embarrassingly simple reset. (I know better.) I've been unplugging my modem about once a week for 15 seconds to restart it, and then also, restarting my router. Or at least doing a DHCP release/renew once the modem has come online.

I've begun to think it's the modem that is misbehaving. So I've been shopping for a new one, thinking at the least, I'll stop renting a modem. While I've been shopping I've come across DOCSIS and Channel Bonding.

At present I have a MediaComm Issue, SurfBoard SB4200, according to the listing on Amazon.com it can be upgraded to DOCSIS 1.1.

My questions are:
•How can I determine how many channels are available to me to bond?
•Is there a benefit, regardless of Updating to a DOCSIS 3.0 Modem?

there is your issue... that modem is way too old. You need at least a SB5101U for docsis 2. i would take it back and just go to walmart and get the other one.

Do you have the 20Mbps or faster?
If you have 12Mb or the 3Mb there is ZERO reason to get a D3 modem at this time.

yes, no reason to go to a D3 modem if you don't have online max or ultra 50

dwcouch - as the other have said - unless you are going for the Ultra, there is no reason to get a docsis 3 modem. as for the channel bonding, that is nothing you need to worry about. the channel bonding is how D3 achieves the higher bandwidths.

DoctorX - that modem is still being issued by our warehouses to be used; the age of the modem is irrelevant, it comes down to its capabilities, and that model has been certified to work - I just put in two last week, have no issues with them.

• DoctorX - I wasn't asking if my modem was working or not. Or what Modem would provide DOCSIS2 or better. And I don't shop at Walmart.

• IowaMan, Boss302_1970, & StreatorGuy - Thank You. I am on 12Mb. I suspected it wouldn't make a difference.

• StreatorGuy - I wasn't worried about channel bonding, because I'm curious, I wondered if there was a way to determine if there were channels to bond. The research I did on DOCSIS and the understanding that it is used to achieve higher bandwidth is what prompted me to ask the above questions.

UPDATE:
I've contacted MediaComm and addressed the issue. I'm going to go ahead and purchase a Modem, return the SurfBoard and drop the $5.00 rental fee / month. The rep also confirmed DOCSIS2 is pretty much the standard anymore and that DOCSIS3 would be of no benefit unless I upgraded to Ultra50. He recommended Motorola or LinkSys. I have chosen to buy the Motorola Surfboard SB5101U.

Amazon.com $46.95
Wal-Mart $79.99

Again, thanks all for the replies!

It has been reported on this forum that some MC market areas are using DOCSIS3 to implement the 20 Mbps MAX service to customers, as it gives the head-end the opportunity to get customers on different channels than those used by the more congested Intro and Standard customers. So D3 is no longer strictly Ultra and above.

[/BQUOTE :

The age of the modem is relevant as well as the condition the modem is in as well.

Just because Mediacom is still issuing 4200s does not mean those modems are not junk. BTW they are. If possible I tag them as defective without ever using them.

Junk modems showing upstream much higher than actual and overall having poor performance.

well most CSRs will tell you otherwise but from my field experience DOCSIS 3 modems when used for standard 12 Mbit service will lock additional downstream channels. 3 or 4 depending on the area and they will utilize additional bandwidth despite people saying otherwise. since most DOCSIS 3 areas are new and utilization is fairly low this will almost always result in eliminating the peak time slowdown.

so better service for $5 less a month? i dont know about you but it sounds good to me!

as it looks like it is doing with me....but everyone is telling me we do not have docsis 3 yet.....but I am still showing 4 bonded channels

if you look at the 3rd post here »[IL] Southern IL HSI slow?

then go to the last page you will see the change from 1 channel to 4....with the same SB6120

yea you can benefit from a DOCSIS 3 modem because of the low utilization it will benefit from the peak slow down times because of the extra channels

@mchsi.com

I pay for 12 MB and I just set up my DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola Surfboard 6121, cost $109.99 at the local bestbuy here. (Des Moines Iowa)

and my speedtest went from 12-14 MB/s to 26-30 MB/s.

And the modem itself confirms that the downstream uses bonded and the upstream uses single. Whatever the correct terms are.

So I can confirm, that it does help!

Although it really depends on your location, because not all locations benefit from it!

it depends how many people in your neighborhood (card at the headend) how much you actually gain but right now DOCSIS 3 Utilazation is pretty low
