1 edit | Rant: Bell salesperson and my upcoming Ebox internet... I keep getting calls from a Bell sales guy trying to sell me their Fib7 internet bundle with FibTV and home phone, all for 20 bucks per month for 3 months, no contract, after which the price goes up to about a gazillion dollars.
He keeps insisting that it's pure fibre, and even after arguing with him that FTTN != FTTH, he keeps insisting it's the same thing. Annoying. Anyway, cut the long story short, I told him I signed up with Ebox cable internet. He goes onto their website to compare the pricing. I tell him to check the blog with the new February prices. His Fib (higher tiers, such as 16/0.8) offers are still pricier, but in order to get the sale he says he can check on my behalf with their retention department (before I even signed up!) if they can match the same deal that I am getting from Ebox. Seriously.
I even went on about how much I dislike Bell due to their monopolistic practices. Compared their plans to Telus in the West. Aliant in the East. Told him I would only consider signing up with them once the company gets their shit together and stops ripping people off. I confront him about their unfair caps and excessive overage pricing. I tell him what I thought about Mirko's BS and all the #### at the CRTC hearings. I even told him I receive 23 digital channels over the air so I don't really need to pay for TV at all.
You'd expect him to give up at this point, or at least feel affronted, wouldn't you? But it's all useless. He's undeterred and keeps going on about how great FibTV and FibInternet is, the best in Canada, he says. A true and proven salesman.
Oddly enough I have to take all 3 services (2 of which I don't want or need) otherwise the offer does not apply and the price goes up threefold. And the truth is, I could take the 3 services just to save a few bucks over the 3 months and then cancel afterwards.
However this being Bell, I know that the cancellation process with them is a very painful thing. They keep billing you for months after you cancel, forgetting to send return boxes, adding mysterious "$3.45" charges to your credit card. So are the few bucks saved over 3 months really worth all the hassle?
It also goes against my every principle: Why the heck would 3 services cost less than 1? Why would I sign up for stuff I don't need? Besides, wasn't bell moaning and complaining in front of the CRTC just how impoverished they are and just how much each GB really costs them? Didn't Mirko claim that for every GB downloaded by their blissful customer he personally had to give blood and tears, so much so that he was becoming pale as a vampire and all of his friends were leaving him?
As far as I am concerned, walking into Ebox office felt just like the old days when I walked into the IStop office, to pick up my modem. Friendly service, easy communication. The biggest advantage to signing up with Ebox cable is that Bell won't get a dime from me anymore. No more dryloop fees. No more $99 speed profile change fees. Boy, does that feel good. |

| reply to alienzzz 20 bucks a month, and if there was no out of pocket (install charges) costs I'd sign up and then come towards the end of month 2, cancel.
I used to do that with Long Distance all the time, I'd switch somewhere else, they'd call me up and offer me the world to switch back, I'd take the offer, get my "world" and then switch back to the cheaper provider.
They never got it, I'd do it over and over again. I always look at the deals they offering, if there is no contact in the mouse print, I'll sign up only to bail when the deal is up. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

My wife's parents pay with their CIBC Visa for LD. Every month it is adjusted to whomever is offering the lowest rate. They have been doing this for more than a decade. -- The irony of common sense, it is not that common. I cannot deny anything I did not say. A kitten dies every time someone uses "then" and "than" incorrectly. I mock people who give their children odd spelling of names. |

Okay, I know I'm bringing this off topic, but I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering this. How the hell do you manage to get 23 channels in the Montreal area? I built an antenna based on the grey-hoverman (without the horizontal bars or a reflector) (instructions) and I get 6-10 channels. Do you have a massive commercial antenna mounted near your roof or something?
Now if only most Habs games were broadcast OTA, I'm sure tons of people would consider switching. |

Well, when I said 23 channels, I was mentioning the raw number (so counting the subchannels such as 33.2, 33.3, 33.4, 57.2, 57.3 and so on). Granted some are duplicates, such as 33.2, and 24.1 is from Sherbrooke but the programming is the same as the local 17.1. I can't receive ABC though.
I have a 4228HD on my 3rd floor balcony (which is even north facing, but some areas of the city like Verdun, NDG, Longueil are good for reception).
I remember that most Habs games were on CBC last year... so yeah... it can work sometimes... |

The geek in me is tempted to try out the FibTV and experiment with its operation, that's the only thing that I find compelling. But then again, seems pointless to install POTS phone and an internet connection I won't be using. And it means giving more money to Bell. |

| Alienzzz:
I took the Bell Fibe 7 offer last summer. Guess what? I was receiving faster internet from the Cable line I had with Acanac (at the time).
I cancelled it on the 3rd day. "No charge" they say. You can cancel in the first 10 days and there is no charge, just return the modem.
No problem. 2-3 months later I get .... A BILL? Saying "past due"? For $48? For one month's Internet?
After I called a few times, got told there was NO RECORD of me in their Billing Department, not to worry about it - I let it go.
SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. Some stupid "NCO" collection agency started to call me about a month ago. I now understand why people HATE Bell now! |

It's just the basic package... Haven't looked at it, but I suspect 80% of the content is the same as I already receive OTA. |

* Note: Radio channels can be listened to on a standard FM/AM radio or the station's own website at no cost. |

I don't know a single one of my friends who didn't have similar stories after cancelling with Bell. That's what I told the guy too. He says: you can cancel it with me, so I will take care of everything. But I am not entirely convinced given their track record.
Anyway no doubt it's a good deal - but that's only for 3 months. The price goes to something like 70 after that for upto a year, after which it goes to a 100. So yeah... |

He's still around, but he changes his username every year or so. You can tell it's him because he brutally murders the English language, and he's got a ton of conspiracy theories. His last username was a synonym for amusing, and his current username seems to be a reference to Santa Claus (at least that's what I get out of it). |
