[WIN7] Shutdown/logoff warning

I recently updated my computer from Vista to 7 (32-bit Home Premium.) Sometimes, when I go to shut down or log off, Windows complains that a program is taking to long to close and offers to let me kill it. It usually lasts only a few seconds before disappearing on it's own. This occurs while the desktop is trying to close.

Did Win7 shorten some watchdog timer or whatever to try and make logging off faster? There is nothing obvious in Event Viewer, as whatever it is does close down, just not fast enough for Win7 apparantly.

I get that sometimes with a component of NiS 2012.

I see that routinely with Norton's common client components, and sometimes with other things. It's nothing to really worry about.

If you are OK with modding your registry, goggle WaitToKillApp. There is that one, and a few other registry settings that you can control how long Windows waits on apps before closing them, when shutting down or logging off. Default is pretty long, like three or four seconds....you can tweak that down to a handful of micro-seconds.

I think most of them reside under HKEY_Current_User\Control Panel\Desktop

Those registry values were there by default in win XP, but they are not there on my Win 7 machine at work here. But I read an article that said you can just create them and they work the same as before.

Naturally, killing applications without giving them time to save data can cause you to experience "data-loss remorse".

If you *were* hitting the timeout for a particular app, then making the timeout shorter guarantees that the app won't have shut itself down.

To answer the OP's question: I think what is going on is simply that the reporting is different, but that's merely a guess.

Under Vista, I don't remember seeing a warning for as long as I can remember, although it's possible something may have shown once or twice in the 5.5 years I've had this computer.

As far as I can tell, the desktop shutdown isn't any longer than before. If anything, it seems to be a bit faster. I do not force it to kill, but just wait it out. Sometimes it takes 2-3 seconds. Once or twice it barely blinked before disappearing.

It would be nice if it would list the name of the offending program. I think I've seen it on XP and even Win2K at the top of the title bar. With Win7, it dims the whole display and just has the generic message.
