Different Twist on Router Needs

My router is located in an office/den in the extreme right corner of my house. It is just about impossible to get whole house wireless coverage from that location. Even if I could, 3/4 of the signal would be outside my house and into the neighbor's house/yard. But, I have a central location where a good wireless AP gives me whole house coverage without sending most of the signal outside of my house.

My current router is a DIR 655 with wireless turned off. Performance has been flawless. I haven't had a glitch in months (maybe years). But the 655 is getting a little old and I have been wondering what to get as a replacement. All the focus there days seems to be on wireless performance. I don't need wireless performance on a router, just good router performance and features.

So, I would appreciate any advice about a router to replace the DIR 655, router specs, stability and performance very important but wireless performance of no importance.

Thanks, Jim

Since you're happy with the DIR655 no reason to Change unless you are looking for a REAL ROUTER/Firewall that performs well and has rich capabilities like the ZyWALL USG50

If your looking for a consumer router the asus rt n56u does very well at small net builder. It has good routing performance. If you want more control mozerds selection is a good one..... Depends on expectations and budget

Thanks for the replies. I don't need to replace the DIR 655 now, I was just trying to look ahead.

The USG50 looks like overkill for a home network?

The Asus is interesting. Small Netbuilder shows excellent throughput.

Overkill, depends on what level of control you desire.
Concur for basic use, it is.

The DIR-655 has features I don't understand and many more features than I use. Yet, when ever I go to one of those sites that checks my internet security, the results are always that my network is invisible to the Internet. I guess the only feature I would want that I don't see is something like OpenDNS where I could block access to classes of web sites.

I would want any replacement router to have at least what the DIR-655 has. I don't think I need a business class router. I have no need for VPN which seems to be the focus of business class routers.

U said u have a special need, yet in the whole post ur only objection is OLD.

Itching to give ur $ away? Don't like the box's color?

Until u can come up with a REAL need to change, get 4 new chrome wheels instead.

How old is your box? Mine is 10 years old but of course it's an honest-to-God hardware firewall, the only thing I wish it has is SNMP monitoring, but to get that am looking to spend $350 and countless hours of research. Nah, I'll get the new iPhone instead.
