ctgreybeardOld dogs can learn new tricksPremium join:2001-11-13 Bethel, CT | [STB] TV Says "No Signal" for two different boxes Here's a strange one ...
This afternoon I turned on the TV and it complained about "No signal" ... the STB (Cisco RNG200) is into HDMI 2. I checked the connections, checked the AppleTV on HDMI 1 (OK), plugged STB HDMI cable into HDMI 1 on TV, still No Signal. Swapped HDMI cables, No Signal. STB showed OK with time or channel as appropriate. So I drove down to the Comcast office and swapped the box. VERY nice people there, quick service, and I come home with an SA 8300HD. Hooked it all up and
SAME PROBLEM! WTF!?
Tried the same stuff, changed HDMI inputs, changed HDMI cable, no luck.
I eventually called into 800-COMCAST and talked to a nice guy who had me try component cables and they are working. So at least I have TV but can anyone think of what else I might try so I can go back to HDMI? I know the RNG box was patched for the Guide early in January but has been working fine. The SA box is also running r27 AFAICT but that has been in place for a while now.
I'm stumped ... -- Old dogs can learn new tricks! |

 | I am assuming the inputs on the remote correlate to the hdmi input on tv, correct? That is a problem with TWC but not sure about Comcast. HDMI 1 plug in on stb, HDMI 1 input on remote. Not sure since you said STB was on HDMI 2. |

As it happened the STB was connected to HDMI#2 on the TV. But connecting the STB to HDMI#1 (verified OK with the AppleTV) or connecting it to HDMI#4 (not currently assigned) got the same No Signal response. Swapping HDMI cable from STB to TV gave the same results. Swapping STB also gave the same results. I am not inclined to believe that two different STBs could have the same problem but neither do I have an alternate explanation ... -- Old dogs can learn new tricks! |

1 edit | reply to ctgreybeard I meant the input on your HD tv remote. Or video source. With TWC boxes, it often restores the pic when those match. HDMI 1 for tv input, HDMI1 on remote under video source, input, etc. As to why both are off, it could have been a brief power glitch.
I would also call the office for a refresher signal since you just hooked it up. |

andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | reply to ctgreybeard I once had my Motorola box not talk on it's DVI (yes, it's old) port to my TV. I think it was the TV itself. I ended up temporarily swapping to a different HDMI on the TV, and it worked. I then tried my BD player on the original port, and it worked. I put everything back, and it worked fine.
HDMI involves HDCP handshaking for encryption keys, and sometimes, one or the other device can get confused.
Also, most TV's never really turn off. Most default to modes (ARC for audio, network control, HDMI control) that keep them in high-power standby instead of a true low-power standby. Unplugging the TV might help clear up a bad key, or just waiting a few hours or so and hope it expires. |

Since I got it running last night on the component cabes I haven't gone back to try the HDMI again.
And, finally, the suggestion to unplug the TV is a good one. I know for sure that this TV doesn't really turn off but I don't know what state the HDMI ports are in when it is "off." If going back to the HDMI doesn't work then I'll try that next.
Thanks to all for responding.

|
 | that is cool to make fun of when comcast fails and your box is DUI. |

 | reply to ctgreybeard give a call into the office and make sure that your HD rate codes are still on your account. Some of the boxes will not output a signal on the HDMI cable if the rate code is missing. The components will still work.
Not likely that the rate code just fell off, but someone could have been doing some account scrubbing, removing old rate codes or may have just simply pulled up the wrong account. |
