You see Mediacom is getting rid of analog channels so it can improve cable TV service and add more HD channels.

That is a waste of time and $$$. Here is why.

I have had Mediacom cable tv, Dishnetwork and Directv in the past. I can truthfully say that Mediacom has a very long way to go before they can compete in the TV service business. The satellite providers have a huge number of HD channels with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. They also have superior DVR's with big 1 TB hardrives. They also support HBO GO, Cinemax Go, Epix online and many other on demand internet video. This is in addition to all their own ON Demand streaming and Pay View stuff.

From the start all channels from Dish/Directv were digital, they never used analog transmission. Unlike cable outages of hours, the satellite outages are only when a big storm comes over your house. The outage typically last only 5-10 minutes and then comes back automatically. These are rare, at least here in the midwest. Maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

Personally I believe cable companies still have a big opportunity in the TV service business - - via internet streaming. On demand TV will eventually make cable tv, satellite tv and maybe OTA TV obsolete. Netflix, Hula, Vudu, Amazon Video and other streaming services are already making watching regular TV less of an option for many people. On Demand TV - it IS the future.

These services require fast Internet. Here is where the opportunity is for Mediacom: Provide fast reliable internet for entertainment streaming - at a reasonable price. If you advertise 12mbps internet then provide that much or more. Give top notch customer service. Change your corporate culture of forgetting about the customer once you have him in a long contract.

AND - Forget trying to compete with Dish/Directv in TV service. That battle is long lost.

You are wrong. I had DirectTV when it first came out and Mediacom had crappy analog service. I had a 35" top of the line TV and could see all the analog crap on Mediacom's signal. I also had Directs first receiver that offered DD5.1 output. Back then DirectTV was so much better and cheaper.

The tide has changed now. DirectTV's SD is not watchable too many compression artifacts. The HD signal of DirectTV is soft and not sharp. Now Mediacom's HD signal has better quality than DirectTV (with HD video all you have to do is send it bit-for-bit to the end device). Direct and Dish both re-compress their source signals to MPEG4 and that causes a quality loss (they do this because of bandwidth limitations.) Now the best image quality for HD is with a cable company like Mediacom. And value is definitely with Mediacom Digital Starz package. Now the Encore and Starz channel are in HD in many locations. Direct doesn't have the Encore line-up in HD like Mediacom.

DVR battle is now won by cable too. You can build your own super DVR that uses a cable-card that only cost 1.99/month with no DVR fees or equipment rentals. Ceton will be selling a "Q" and "Echo" whole home super DVR solution for those that don't feel up to the task of building their own. You can also use the TIVO cablecard HD DVR on cable which many love TIVO UI (I don't like the monthly fees.)

Mediacom is the best value and HD quality for video. How do you like your $100/month bill for video with Direct? (Assuming you have HBO, Cinemax, EPIX, multiple TV HD and whole home HD DVRs).

I doubt it's anywhere 1 GHz. I think most of the areas are 850 MHz or so. But it' doesn't matter, analog is not bandwidth efficient and picture quality is not the greatest.

You post could have been taken straight from a Mediacom advertisement. I still can not stop laughing.

....and increase profits by requiring box rentals. cant leave that out

No, because if you have a digital TV ready you won't need a DTA. Also DTAs will be free for this year and after that they are $0.99/mo. AFAIK Mediacom paid $45 for each DTA so it would take 45 months just to break even.

They are doing this so they can better utilize the available bandwidth.

so, after that 45 months theyl stop charging people? i think not. if there "just" $45 then customers should have the option to purchase, seriously most folks will end up with service a lot longer than 45 months.

Raise your hand if you think that any of the DTAs will actually last 4 years...

Thought so...
