Where did Google get it ?

A few days ago I recievied an e-mail from Google about their privacy policy.

The thing is I have never installed Chrome, used google from a toolbar or had a Gmail account.

Where did they get my e-mail address from ?
so much for privacy.

They have a number of products and affiliates. Hard to say with certainty.

Honestly, at some point you gave it to them.

I have many non-google emails and haven't gotten an email from them on any of the others. So I doubt they are randomly emailing every know email address.

I keep getting travel confirmations and flight itineraries emailed to me courtesy of some idiot who input the wrong email address. It's a company I've never done business with. Maybe it was through a similar error that Google got your email address.

There's enough info in those emails for me to do some damage to the airline and individual. Repeated requests to have my name removed have been ignored, so now they get filtered and deleted immediately.

Basically any google product or any product which would later be part of google is part of this. So if you have (had) a youtube account, picassa, blogspot, etc., registered even with a non gmail email, you would get this privacy email.

Nope.

I got the same thing, and I've never installed a Google product. Not Chrome, not Picasa, not Gmail, not any of them. Not because I was worried about them at the time, but because I already had better alternatives.

And I change my email provider periodically, which narrows the field of suspects to a degree. I only move the accounts I care about, and throw away the rest.

So either they are emailing people randomly, or they have way more on us than we know, either through scraping or purchase. Not a happy thought.

Google has their hands in a lot of products that many don't realize. Several have already been touched on.

The thing is I keep a Hotmail account for product and forum registration, reserving my ISP's mail account for close friends and family. This policy notification came in on my ISP's account.
Whenever I needed a search engine I always opened a new tab and went to google.com directly...no toolbars or browsers add-ons.

I wonder if there is a full list out there.

I would have considered it SPAM and deleted it. Somewhere along the way, they got your address through sales or something. Unless you signed up for mail from them, get rid of it.

May be some day you've sent mail to your friend, who has GMail account? Or may be some of your friends forwarded your mail to yet another guy with GMail account?

I used Google checkout a few years back when they were offering $ discounts to use it. That's my only known Google interaction. They sent me the e-mail.

No, no youtube, facebook or other. I don't think anyone I know has a gmail account. I suppose a forward is possible.

It is nearly impossible to keep an email address completely private these days. In one way or another, it will eventually find its way into the wild.

Sort of like phone numbers. Nearly impossible to completely avoid telemarketing calls. Lucky and few are those that have never receive unsolicited calls on their phone number.

This probably won't apply to the OP, but I notice that you are a "Premium" member of this site. This site uses Google checkout for signing up for premium membership and for tool point purchases. Purchasing tool points (after this site stopped using their Yahoo! store checkout) is how Google knows who I am (I also received the privacy change email). Otherwise, I would have never willingly given Google any information at all (and I also have a similar aversion to using eBay/PayPal).

OTOH, Google checkout is used at sites other than this one, so that could still be the point of vulnerability for the OP too.

What a shame. I didn't know this site was using Google and Paypal now for toolpoints. (Not that I liked Yahoo one but of the evils, I consider it the lessor). I hate Paypal. Got burned by them and was in one of the class actions against them. I would never use them nor would I use Google, for toolpoints here, or for any reason.
