 | Ghostery Update Buglist For the last few days, whenever I try to update the buglist, I get "invalid security certificate". It also states that the issuer is untrusted. The issuer being GoDaddy.com.
Anyone one else have this issue?
Thanks, Bob |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to OregonBob Yep. I have that problem suddenly. I do have GoDaddy as untrusted because it is a sleazy cert provider. I want to know before I go to a website using a GoDaddy cert that they are using a cert from a sleazy provider. In Fx, it is a convoluted process just so I can get needed information and then allow GoDaddy cert for a particular site on a one time basis. (It is elegantly done in Opera).
I have had GoDaddy as untrusted in all browsers for a LONG time. I just checked Opera 11.61 and it has an even worse problem suddenly with Ghostery GoDaddy cert. It displays that same warning instead of the usual popup I get when I go to a site that uses GoDaddy cert. Opera gets into a constant loop now of flickering that warning over and over and over when I try to update the bug list and it is very difficult to stop it. I tried to go to Ghostery forum on Opera just now. That is NOT a secure site but the GoDaddy untrusted cert alert (same as what you posted for Fx) popped up over and over. Finally, I was able to get to the Ghostery forum on Opera and it is NOT a secure site so that is really puzzling why an untrusted cert alert kept popping up when trying to go there.
I had tried earlier to go to Ghostery forum on Fx and it won't load correctly. It used to always load with no problems on Fx. Suddenly though it now loads without its style sheet! So, it looks horrible and I can't navigate it and that was what prompted me to try to reach the forum on Opera (so I could post about these problems). At least, Fx did not popup that untrusted cert alert when I tried to go to Ghostery forums. Fx only pops that alert up when I click on update bug list on the Ghostery menu and this problem just started very recently.
I can't purchase anything at Amazon, using Fx, for the same reason regarding not being able now to update Ghostery's bug list on Fx. Amazon uses GoDaddy cert for its images (but Verisign for everything else secure) and I used to simply allow it each time in Fx. As of about a month ago, I cannot do this. I just get the popup you posted and no way to fix the problem. I had to switch to Opera to be able to buy something at Amazon.
The weird thing is that I am still using Fx 4.01 so if there are recent changes in how Fx handles certs I should not be affected since I am on an old version. So, I am inclined to think the problem is some change at Amazon and Ghostery in regards to certs.

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to OregonBob I also have Ghostery on SM 2.6.1. I just updated the buglist on it with NO problems. I have GoDaddy cert there as UNtrusted and I did NOT get that untrusted cert popup that I get in Fx and Opera. SM did indicate the use of javascript...maybe there is a java script problem on Fx and the latest Opera.
However, when I tried to go to the Ghostery forum on SM, I did not get any untrusted cert popups like on Opera, but the forum displays without its style sheet and is unusable. It looks just like it does on Fx. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to OregonBob I got my problem with Fx not updating the bug list fixed. Since I have no idea if your problem comes from the same reason as mine, I don't know if the fix that worked for me would work for you.
Ghostery developer told me that Ghostery, as of about a week ago, now updates the bug list using SSL for security reasons. That is a nice improvement. But, for me, it caused problems because I have GoDaddy certs set as Untrusted. Usually that means Fx will give me the warning page about the site I am about to visit using an untrusted cert and then I can click through that warning to the popup where I can make an exception for that website to trust the cert one time or permanently. But in this case, Fx was not giving me that warning. Instead, I was seeing the same warning that you posted and on it there is no way to tell Fx to make an exception and allow the untrusted GoDaddy cert for ghostery.com.
The developer gave me a URL that forced Fx to give me the correct warning popup so I was able to then click through that popup to the one where I could tell Fx to trust the GoDaddy cert permanently for ghostery.com. (Other sites using GoDaddy certs will still cause Fx to give me the warning popup which is what I want. I did not want to tell Fx to accept GoDaddy certs permanently at all websites that use them).
Here's the URL. You can try it and see if it will give you the usual Fx warning that you click through to make an exception for Ghostery.com:

| reply to OregonBob Thank you Mele for your assistance in correcting my problem. I too am using XP Pro with and older version of FF.
It's good that they switched to SSL but when something works good for a long time and then suddenly does not, I am very leery.
I was able to update ghostery in a different browser with out the warning, so I kind of suspected it was FF that was broken, but with the way things are nowadays, I stay on the side of caution.
Thanks again, Bob |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to OregonBob Yes, I wasn't sure it was a Fx problem until my SeaMonkey latest version (which also has GoDaddy certs listed as untrusted) updated the bug list with no problems, no screens asking about a GoDaddy cert, or saying the cert was untrusted, etc. It updated in a couple of seconds. That is when I knew it was something to do with my using an old version of Fx and I then went to Ghostery forum and posted about it.
It is finally time for me to upgrade Fx. I said I would stay with ver 4 for about a year and it has been about 11 months. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |
