| Making a custom attic door with skeleton lock old attic door | new door |
All to often they only slap a piece of plywood to act as an attic door so I decided to dip into my scrap wood and build a custom attic door. It's not complicated but thought it might be interesting enough to share.

 | Cool. Only issue I see is the insulation (or lack of). Having made such a door myself in a place where there was none, I can attest that insulating the door makes a difference. |

 | reply to Dennis Nice Job! But I'm confused. How does that lead to an attic? My attic is above my head. Regional thing, maybe? -- "Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye" |

| reply to Dennis I have a rancher with an added second floor only it doen't go above the bedrooms or the garage, so I have 2 attics, with a drafty door leading to each. I guess I'll have to peel off the blue tape and make a couple of my own.
Thanks for the info. -- Oh, no, not clown shoes. They mean I'm in for some mighty bad news. |

Although a hidden door with a push lock (?) would have been cool too! |

| reply to Dennis Thanks all. Don't be mislead though there is no real fancy wood working or skill involved (aside from chiseling out the damn hinges) the whole front of the door is a facade really. It only looks fancy.
In all the whole project was only like $30 bucks because I had hinges lying around, scrap 3/4" plywood, scrap door stop and extra door trim. -- My Blog. Because I desperately need the acknowledgement of others.

One of the little tasks in our basement renovation is a side door to access the under-stair storage area.. you've given me a perfect way to do it.
Thanks! |

| reply to Dennis Thanks for the post. I need to make two of these sometime soon to install when the insulation people cut holes in the knee walls. Is it attached to the studs on the sides? It was hard to tell how the frame was attached from the pictures. Thought about selling these?
The only other thing the insulation people mentioned that I didn't see is rigid insulation board on the door. We have 1 knee wall door now and they are going to add 2" rigid insulation board to it. |

oh and the attic hole was already rough framed out (just like a normal door) so that's what the door was nailed to.

| Ha yeah, it takes me a few days to convert them into instructables so I never mentioned it here. I like the picture tagging ability they offer so I try to put my stuff on there occasionally.
