Connected to internet but browsers aren't getting through.

I'm working on a friends laptop. He's running Windows XP Media edition. I can connect to the same wireless router I'm connected to as I'm posting this. The network connections say that I am connected to the internet. Using command prompt I can run trace route and ping any website successfully however when I attempt to use IE or Firefox I cannot get through to the website. Firefox was a brand new install yesterday after i realized IE wasn't working and still nothing.

Id do:

Check IE and FF for proxy settings.
Check ping by domain name if you only did ip address, if it fails change dns servers.
Uninstall and re-install any active anti virus.

It was a 2006 copy of norton that was running in the background. I've dealt with this before but it took me some time to figure out what was going on. Thanks for the reply though!

Yup, had my fair share of Norton doing this, even on their newer versions. One of the many reasons I will never recommend it.
