 | [Other] U-Verse won't work with VOIP I just signed up for AT&T U-Verse internet service. The network is up and running with most devices connecting, no problem. The only device not connecting is my VOIP. I have Lightyear Xtreme VOIP service, and have used it with no problems for five years. It has always connected to any modem until now. My VOIP router is a signalsys SP200X.
The dsl model AT&T gave me is a 2Wire 3600 HGV. I have gone into the 2Wire and set the VOIP router to DMZ plus mode, but it still kicks me off the internet. I know it's connecting because I can pick up the phone and get a dial tone, but as soon as I dial that last number the WAN light (on the 2wire) turns red and everything is kicked off the internet.
Can anyone tell me how to work around this? |

 | Make sure to disable "SIP Application Layer Gateway" on the 2-wire under Advanced->Configure Services. |

But I thought I'd take a look, and I could not find the SIP ALG toggle. Is it possible it doesn't show up if I'm in DMZplus? |

 | Some 2-wire modem models have the above mentioned "SIP Application Layer Gateway" option. I'm not sure which models do, so if the 3600 doesn't, then my suggestion above doesn't apply. He may try setting it in bridged mode, with another router inbetween, if necessary, to do the PPPoE authentication. |

 | Thanks for the quick replies.
I also cannot find the SIP ALG option. I've looked for a way to set it in bridge mode and haven't found one. I read somewhere on the internet that the 3600 doesn't have a bridge option, but don't know if that's accurate. |

 | reply to sumpteretc If you have a router (other than the 2Wire and the SignalSys), try using it to "launder" the connection: SignalSys WAN port connected to a LAN port on extra router; WAN port of extra router (set for DHCP) to a LAN port on 2Wire.
Alternatively, connect a PC to the 2Wire via Wi-Fi and set up Internet Connection Sharing to share the connection to the Ethernet interface, then connect the SignalSys WAN port to the PC's Ethernet port.
If you have the SIP credentials for Lightyear, try shutting down the SignalSys and using a softphone to connect.
If you have admin access to the SignalSys and enough information to restore after any changes, you might see whether you have the problem, when the SignalSys is configured for another VoIP provider (if you don't have one, try a free Callcentric account). |

When you say "not connecting", what do you mean? Is this an ATA? Is it getting an IP? Is it able to register?
You might want to seek help in the VOIP forum on this site. -- USNG: 16TDN2870 Find your USNG coordinates: USNGWeb |

 | "Not connecting" isn't accurate or at least not specific enough. It is connecting, as in getting an ip address. I can pick up the phone and get a dial tone. However, when I dial the number, the 2wire shuts down the internet connection.
When I set the VOIP to DMZplus, there is no difference. |

 | [BQUOTE=sumpteretc However, when I dial the number, the 2wire shuts down the internet connection. [/BQUOTEWhat happens on incoming?
Also, please answer what you can from my previous post, i.e. can you connect to Lightyear with a different device? Connect to a different provider with your SignalSys? Connect the SignalSys to the 2Wire via some indirect means? |

 | Most of the time incoming calls don't make it to the phone. Lightyear has a voicemail system, so we get an email telling us we have a voice mail. A couple of times the phone has rang, but as soon as we answer the dsl modem shuts down the internet connection.
As for the other things, we were connected to lightyear at my in-laws' place using their cable modem until two weeks ago. This problem only started when we plugged into the U-Verse modem. We don't have an extra router around the house so I haven't had a chance to try putting another router between the modem and the VOIP.
I don't know how to connect to another provider. Could you give some more specific information about how to do that? |

Try connecting one to the phone port on the ATA device, and then plugging the phone into the filter. I don't know if it will help, but I used that method to fix a Vonage setup over regular DSL that was showing the same symptoms. Every time they tried to answer or place a call, the DSL modem would lose sync. As soon as they hung up the phone, it would re-connect. |

In the meantime, try making a call from Gmail. If that also knocks out DSL sync, we'll know that the trouble is unrelated to Lightyear or your device; you should be able to get help from AT&T or the U-Verse forum here.
If Gmail calls work ok (and you get a Google Voice number if you don't already have one), then you can use this as a workaround for calling, until you get the Lightyear problem fixed. If your Lightyear service includes call forwarding, you could also forward incoming calls to Gmail. You could also try Internet Connection Sharing as an alternate means of connecting the SignalSys. |

 | OK, finally borrowed a router for troubleshooting, and finally got it to work. I'm using a linksys router between the 2wire and the signalsys. Takes awhile to dial, but gets it done and makes the call without getting kicked off the internet. Thanks for the help! |
