| Printer question/ recommendation Hello hello,
I am in the market for a new printer. I need a all in one (print, scan, fax) I need it to connect to 2 computers. The one I have now is hardwired into my router. So I think it can be either wired or wireless. (not sure whats easiest or best)
I have had nothing but HP's in the past and for some reason I dont seem to have alotta luck with them. For instance the one I have now, officejet pro 8500, is starting to give me "carrige jam" notifications alot now. And its just about 1 year old.
I was thinking a good all in one laser printer (color) if not too expensive. If its too much money then office jet but a good one.
Can you guys give me some good recommendations? -- Last night I saw a naked cowgirl, she was floatin across the ceilin |

 | I would not recommend the one you looked at, as it does not do duplex. When you really need duplex, you will really denounce yourself for not getting it. |

| reply to bobbagels Color is costly because you have to replace 4 toner cartridges instead of one. Here are some good B/W lasers:

| reply to bobbagels said by bobbagels:I was lookin at the price of the toner cartridges and it is pretty expensive. Toner is expensive per cartridge unit but to compare, you have to look at cost per page. I would be surprised if the MFC-J6910DW ink cartridges did more than 500 pages whereas most laser toners do 2000-3000 pages. Also, if you don't use an inkjet printer for a while, the heads tend to get clogged. You can leave a laser printer sitting around for a LONG time without any trouble.
Anyway, unless you really need color capability, I highly recommend sticking to BW laser machines. -- My Site |

I've used Brother mono (b/w) lasers for a while now, and my most recently purchased inkjet AIO is a Brother MFC-495CW. I'm sure my next printer will be a Brother, too, if/when I decide to upgrade either of the two I have now.
The first Brother I bought was a refurb mono laser several years ago. It was great, but later on I decided I wanted duplex, so I donated the refurb to my kid's school (where AFAIK it's still in use) and got one with duplex. It's still going strong, after printing two kid's worth of high school papers and projects, as well as tons of other stuff.
I bought the MFC-495CW after my HP Deskjet mysteriously decided to start skewing each page it printed. It's been great, and I like the Brother AIO software WAY better than the HP crap.
If I had to pick the one thing I like least about any of my Brother printers, it's that the AIO is a bit of an ink hog. But overall the ink is somewhat cheaper than HP's, and when you add in that the AIO has been VERY reliable and functional (and has a better software package!), I think the ink useage is a wash... |

| reply to bobbagels I really like Canon printers. I had a bunch of HP's in the days but in the last 5 years all Canon. I won't touch a color laser due to cartridge costs. It's just too much for my wallet.
I have an older Canon ImageClass MF4690 which has been perfect. It's USB/network.

I worked in a large company where we were a wholesaler and stocked Brother laser printers. Every time an employee ordered a Brother for their desk it was my headache since I worked in the IT dept. They just sucked. Users that had HP or Canon had little issues. |

| reply to bobbagels If you want a good basic color laser printer look into the samsung CLP series. Their current ones CLP-325 is wireless and prints great color for under $200. I own a older CLP-300 and my brother recently got a CLP-325 and love it. Aftermarket toner for all 4 colors is $27. That is cheaper than most single after market ink jet cartridges! |

| reply to bobbagels There are several very good, fast, and economical choices in color inkjet AIOs now from HP, Epson, Brother and Canon, any of which can get the job done, and be far more cost-effective than any current color laser AIO.
Some of this however, not surprising, is "luck of the draw".
I have 2 HP OfficeJet 8500s...one the original 8500 (residing at my office), and the newer 8500a, both of which run trouble-free to this day...but I have heard from other 8500 owners who have had the phantom "carriage jam" notifications, especially in the older 8500. We also have a god-awful HP OfficeJet 4500...dirt-cheap, and for a reason, ugh! If you go for an ink jet AIO, go for the top of the line model, regardless of brand. You should not have to spend over $250 anyway, with some judicious shopping.
There is now a new OfficeJet 8600 that so far seems to be getting very positive reviews, but then you may be burnt out on HPs..
bobbagels, the Brother color laser AIO that you are looking into is probably a pretty decent unit...do keep in mind the current draw when starting up...I would recommend that it is not sharing the same circuit as your computer.
I am fine with black only laser printers, but color laser printers to this day suffer from several draw-backs: Check out the price of the replacement carts for that color laser...they aren't cheap, and several current ink jet AIOs have carts that are rated for the same level of usage at much more compelling cost (this once was the primary advantage of a laser printer, but not so now)
Also, drum replacement is no small deal! True, it may take awhile to go through a set of drums (each color has a drum), but the replacement costs for a set will make throwing the printer away and buying a new one, more cost effective than replacing them. While some inkjets, such as the 8500 series have replaceable print heads, at $59 each (there are 2 of them), rated at the same life span as the color laser drums, that is a far more practical-cost consumable. -- Deeds, not words |

CylonRedPremium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | reply to bobbagels I recently picked up an Epson Workhorse 845 ($60 off right now as they are clearing the model it looks like) and so far - I like it. Duplexing, wireless\wired, 250 sheets of paper (could be 500 though) and very good reviews in Cnet. Setup quickly and had 2 pcs running it in less than 35 minutes - included a firmware update.
Never used Epson before - replaced a HP 895 Cse that was 11-12 years old. -- Brian
