moby63 join:2012-01-10 Scarborough, ON 2 edits | Why is my Wifi faster than Wired?? Checking my speed I discovered my Wireless laptop connection was way faster than my wired pc connection using an SMCD3GN router. I am getting 10Mbps on my PC but 20Mbps on my laptop. I am using Cat 6 Ethernet cable for my PC too!!
I unplugged the wire from my PC to the Router and installed a Belkin Micro 300 USB Wireless N Adapter and the speed nearly doubled from 10 to 20Mbps!!
I have two PCs. Tried this switch with the other PC with the same result.
I thought wired is always faster than wireless.
Any ideas? |

On the PC's built in Intel ProSet Ethernet Adapter, I changed the speed from Auto to 1.0 Gbps/full Duplex. I also ran Intel Cable/hardware Diagnostics and it passed all.
Ran Speed Test again. No luck. Still 10.2 Mbps!! |

Are the ports on the router 1Gbps/100Mbps as well? Or could they have been inadvertently switched to 10Mbit or half-duplex?
What is the speed of the link reported by your computer? |

I've heard there's some really crappy fake CAT6 out there, namely Chinese knockoff copper-clad aluminum or steel, but I don't know how performance is affected. If the cable sticks to a magnet, it's steel.

moby63 join:2012-01-10 Scarborough, ON | I have tried two different desktops. Wired is slow and wireless (with an N USB adapter) is fast. Tried using Rogers supplied Cat 5E Cable as well. No luck.
Result: Wired slow, Wirelss twice as fast!
Stumped for an answer. |

| Are you using Windows as your OS? When the wired link is established with the router, how fast is the link, according to the OS?
I'm leaning towards QoS being setup incorrectly on the router, ports configured incorrectly on the router, or something else messed up with the switch part of the router.
If you connect two computers together through the router, can they transfer data to each other at gigabit speeds? |

Not sure what they did but now the wired matches the wireless!!
Yay!! Hope this lasts. |
