Re: Safe Room - Costs/Benefits? said by Hall:said by 05451874:Anything you can jump into in 2 minutes you can drive to in 3-4 minutes. Even if you had a weather radio on and got a warning, you can round up your family, get to the car, and drive someplace in 3-4 minutes ? As nunya suspects, you must not have tornadoes in your area or much knowledge of them at all. Maybe you've watched the movie "Twister" though Maybe they didn't pay attention when Aunt Meg said how long it was between when the warning went off and the twister hit ? "I didn't have any warning. The sirens went off a few seconds before it hit" . |

1 edit | reply to howardfine said by howardfine:said by burner50:2011 looks scary, but there were two tornadoes that hit heavily populated areas (St. Louis, MO and Tuscaloosa, AL). That would be Joplin, MO, not St. Louis. I was referring to major population centers, and in 2011 St Louis did in fact get hit by a tornado but there was no deaths. I was trying to provide examples of tornadic activity near major cities, Joplin is nowhere near being a "Major" city.
Nobody pays attention to small towns unless it is catastrophic damage (Greensburg, Joplin, Etc), but when a tornado gets near a city, it is reported on heavily making tornadoes seem more prevalent than normal. -- I'm tired of killing stupid people just trying to do my job and go home! |

If I remember the movie correctly, they has a storm cellar, just Dorothy was running to get Toto and didn't get to safety before the twister hit... -- --Standard disclaimers apply.-- google this "(sqrt(cos(x))*cos(200*x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(9-x^2), -sqrt(9-x^2)" |

You typically get under 60 seconds to react so even having the best shelter money can buy isn't going to help if you can't get into it in time. If you have the time to get into it you have the time to move away from it as well. -- "Anyway I am going to need to go with, never argue with an idiot as they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." - matt5 |

 | reply to Hazy Arc One of my relatives just put in a prefabricated root cellar that's made of concrete. They just brought it out on a truck and set it in the hole that was dug and he backfilled it with his tractor. That thing would make a great storm shelter along with being a safe. I think he got it from rainy day root cellars. I don't know what it cost, but it's awsome. |

did they compact the bottom of the excavation and/or did they put a gravel or sand cushion? |
