 | Help...my wife hates Charter TV but I love Charter Internet Any suggestions on making Charter TV better? She hates the DVR and the fact that you can only record 2 shows at the same time. I on the other hand like Charter's Internet speeds. We are coming over from ATT Uverse. Thanks in advance! |

| If the limiting factor is being able to record more than 2 shows at a time, the two of you can live with Charter's comparatively poor HD lineup, and money is no object, check out the Tivo Premiere Elite ($500 + $20/month for service or another $500 for lifetime service), which will record 4. »www.tivo.com/products/tivo-premi···dex.html
We have a Tivo HD (2 tuners) with Charter HDTV. We paid out the rear for it, but it works well, especially compared to the DVRs Charter provides. Really, my only gripe with Charter at this point is the HD lineup. Charter finally added a lot of overdue HD channels in 2011, but they still have quite a ways to go to catch up with Uverse and satellite.
Charter blows Uverse out of the water in terms of Internet speed and price. AT&T has some promotions that make Uverse look decent price-wise during the promotion period, but after that's up, their prices are absolutely ridiculous.
You could also split your services and use Charter for Internet and Uverse for TV. |

Solution is quite simple actually. Get some one else for tv, or tell the wife to go outside or something!!

I wouldn't even spend that much on the tv itself!!

| You Don't have an open mind then...
TiVo can record 4 shows at a time. Charter DVR only can record 2.
It costs $20 a month for a charter DVR, so after 4 years of having the TiVo, you've almost paid the same as what you'd have paid for charters DVR, except you own the DVR, and after 4 years you stop paying (rent a box and you'd continue to pay $20 a month)... Not to mention the TiVo is a much better DVR than charters boxes.
Personally I have directv and love it (3 DVRs so I can record 6 shows at a time then watch them in any room) |

Can't make it better, and this probably won't satisfy her, but I have a 3 way splitter which allows me to record 2 shows on the Charter DVR, one on my PVR and watch a live show on the direct to TV split. Cost minimal if you have a personal recorder with a tuner, or purchase one [not a Tivo of course]. |

 | reply to STLCompGuy Yeah. Just like my wife. Drop Charter TV and get DirecTv and keep the internet. Best of both worlds. |

DirecTV is a great option. Or you can just go back to U-verse TV and keep Charter internet. Nothing's really stopping you from doing that also. -- AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011 Rethink Billable.

 | reply to goillini this is my story with ATT Uverse
actually we would have stayed with ATT U VERSE but ATT screwed us bad....
we recently moved from a condo into a house......it took ATT UVERSE about 1 week to install the UVERSE in the new house. I dont know why...but they had to use all new equipment....we could not use the equipment we had in our Condo. I had to schlep the old equipment to a UPS store and send it back. Anyway, ATT UVERSE was working great in our house for about 3 months. In late November our Uverse Phone stopped working. We called a UVERSE tech to come out to the house and he could not fix it. He said that ATT mistakenly ported over....or whatever they call it....where our UVERSE phone line was not a part of our ATT UVERSE account anymore. Anyway, ATT said it would take weeks to port it back over to the ATT UVERSE side again on our account. Anyway, it was early January and still it was not done. So we called to cancel. The next day, an actual ATT phone tech guy came out to the house to fix our phone. Apparently what was going on was that the old home owner did not have his VOIP ATT set up right so when the ATT UVERSE guy came to install it in the house once we moved in.....he must not have one it right either. In any event, the ATT phone guy fixed our phone...but only half way....it was working great as an old style ATT PHONE LINE but they ATT UVERSE was still not able to port it over to our ATT UVERSE account. Bottom line is that we had Internet and TV working on our ATT UVERSE account but we had the old fashioned ATT phone line. I did not want that....so we switched to Charter.
anyway....we signed a 2 year "agreement" so lets see how long I will stick with Charter. Hopefully if I do decide to cancel them I wont get charged a penalty fee or whatever.
I had the same thing as you had with ATT Uverse....and my bill was about $150 when everything was working right. But I only had 1 HD DVR and 1 HD STBs. I had U450 and Sports Pack and HD Ultra.

 | reply to BF69 well...I dont know what to tell you...TV is a big form of entertainment for us. When I get home at night....there could be 3 shows recording at the same time...and I'm lucky to be able to watch whatever I want since I had the 4th tuner available to me.
I myself am addicted to shows on TLC, Cooking shows, History Channel, TruTV, Home remodeling, News, Sports....etc. etc. etc.

 | reply to BlakePaulson I agree with you 100%....if people are not interested in TV why are they on a Charter forum?! The main purpose of Charter is to provide TV service...all the other stuff is just fluff to line Charter's pocket books.

 | Go for directv. Picture quality is good (Well hey, dog shit looks 'good' compared to uverse, but charter hd looks good, slightly worse the directv), and lots of channels. |

 | reply to STLCompGuy Where do people keep getting this ridiculous notion that if you buy a tivo you stop paying for it? I dont have a tivo, but im fairly sure i remember there being a monthly fee to use the box still. On top of that, they have contracts so you are stuck with them for a year.
So, option A is buy a tivo out of pocket, and pay $20/mo to use it, if it breaks, tough doodie its yours, you bought it.
Option B. Buy tivo for $500, buy lifetime sub to tivo for $500, it breaks, tough cookies you bought it.
Option C. Pay charter $20 a month for a lesser dvr. It breaks, charter replaces it.
If i have that wrong please correct me, but i fail to see the advantage of owning a tivo besides the obvious feature differences. |
|
 | This is why you get directv. $7 per hddvr that can go up to 1tb and has whole home dvr service. |

 | reply to STLCompGuy Charter's Tivo Premier service should launch nationwide later this year, I'd just suck it up and wait on that to come out... |

| Charter's Tivo will be the Premiere, not the 'Premiere Elite,' so it will only have two tuners. That wouldn't fix the guy's issue (well, his wife's issue) of only being able to record two shows at once.
So, if he wants to stick with Charter for cable TV and is willing to pay the big bucks to be able to record up to 4 shows at a time, he'll need to buy his own Tivo Premiere Elite.

Jerm join:2000-04-10 Richland, WA kudos:2 | reply to STLCompGuy DTV just started rolling out their new 5-tuner DVR. If you have multiple TVs, each extra TV "box" is just a little IR receiver about the size of a pack of playing cards (like AppleTV) that is simply an Ethernet Over Coax bridge and uses your main DVR's electronics.
I use Charter's $35/month 2-year contract deal, and then DTV (of course). I fail to see how the bundles really save any $$$. You can normally get each service individually for a lower price if you look around. As for "home phone" if you are techie enough then use prepaid VOIP (ie voip.ms) and enjoy phone service for less than $5/month (less than taxes alone on my telco or cable phone). |
