64 bit client

So I was a tad disappointed yesterday when I got off work, I spent 30 mins doin the optimize I got back about 10gigs so yay, but anyway I was disappointed that there were probs w/ the live release of the client. Tonight I get off work and before loggin on I checked and YAY. So far I cant say its a major difference but I do notice things respond a bit faster. Im happy.

Was curious what those of you w/ 64 bit systems think. One of my guildies was like "But wont it allow wow to use more of your memory?" I was like sure will!!! I have 12 gigs it can eat another 6 from normal operations and Id still have plenty.

A blue post in one of those 64-bit threads in the tech support forum indicated that WoW has been able to utilize memory beyond the cap for quite some time but that running a 64-bit app should show increased performance. (I tried to find the post, but am not familiar enough with their board software to find it; got bored trying. I was surprised to learn their software was designed to directly access the memory like that.)

I installed the 64-bit client and things do seem a bit "peppier." Loading times seem faster, manipulating the data after scanning the ah with Auctioneer is faster, and it even seems that data written to files due to addons at /exit is faster.

Do you need to do anything to activate the 64 bit client or is it done automatically?

A 64-bit client is once again available for use with Patch 4.3.2. Before being able to launch WoW in 64-bit mode you will need to download the 64-bit client for PC/Mac (using one of the links below), and unzip it into your World of Warcraft directory. Once you extract the files you can start the 64-bit client by opening the Launcher as normal (Run as Administrator if applicable). To switch back to the 32-bit client, go into Options -> Game Preferences, and check the Launch 32-bit client setting. The game will display which version you are using at the bottom left hand corner of the login screen. ex: Version 4.3.2 (15211) (Release x64)

Build 4.3.2.15211 - PC link, Mac link

**Important things to keep in mind**
The 64-bit client is being distributed separately from the Retail version as it is not yet supported for use with World of Warcraft.
Launching the game in 64-bit mode can only be done after patching the game to version 4.3.2, downloading and extracting the necessary files.
The game’s built in voice chat does not currently work when using the 64-bit client.
[Mac] The 64-bit Mac client does not currently support the in-game movie recording functionality.
[Mac] The 64-bit Mac client iTunes' Remote feature does not work at the present time.
[Mac] The 64-bit Mac client does not currently support the customized LCD display for the Logitech G15 series of keyboards.
[Mac] The 64-bit Mac client is currently not supported on 10.5 systems. You will need 10.6.8 or later for this version.

Additional System Requirements:

Windows XP Professional “x64 Edition” / 64-bit Windows Vista / 64-bit Windows 7 (latest service packs). Mac OS 10.6.8 or newer. Mac Computer with Core 2 Duo or better, 2 GB or more of RAM.

If you encounter any issues while using the 64-bit version, please report your findings in this thread and return to using the 32-bit executable. In order to facilitate support when contacting Technical Support, please inform them if you are using the 64 bit client.

To remove the 64-bit client completely, delete the following files from your World of Warcraft folder:

Windows
Battle.net-64.dll
MovieProxy.exe
WoW-64.exe

Mac
World of Warcraft-64.app

Additional Information:

How to tell if you have a 64-bit operating system:

Mac: »support.apple.com/kb/HT4287

I can tell you that doing mundane things you will not notice a difference. In LFR however I noticed a huge difference. I was able to maintain a steady 30fps even during things like Zon'ozz black phase where I would lag to about 5 fps previously. The lag only happened in lfr and now it is apparently gone. Yay

is there anyway "in-game" to confirm which client you're running?

Now that I've been using the new client for a few hours I can definitely say that the game performs more smoothly. I play on a laptop (this is only tiding me over until I can afford to build a great gaming rig) so my bottleneck is definitely the hdd more than anything else, so I didn't expect a great boost to begin with. After going through a few AV's when there are 20+ players bunched around the Stormpike graveyard my fps doesn't take as large of a fps hit as it used to. As far just sitting around Stormwind doing auctions I got a nice 10fps gain by just switching clients.

I ran with the new 64 client last night thru LFR and didn't see a big difference. Although I haven't had much issue with game performance in the past. Where I did see a huge difference was loading screen times. Seemed the initial load (during addon startup) was twice as quick and each loading screen after was also shortened quite a bit.

IMO it is worth it.

I just installed the 64 bit client to my laptop and I have noticed a big improvement. I had a problem with looting where the system would seem to stutter. I am sure it's an addon I just never could figure out which one. Problem is gone now. I have been playing for the better part of 2 hours. Ran a few heroics and no slowdown in high aoe. I even tanked on my baby druid and with half of sm graveyard chasing my bear butt with aoe, no slowdown. I am quite happy with it so far.

I'll be interested to see how it works tonight. I installed the 64 bit at lunch and have DS tonight.

With all the good responses so far, I'll give it a shot.

THe only current caveat is that it's unsupported, but I can live with that. The more people that download/use it, the more likely it gets official support. Although I'm guessing that with MoP prep patch it'll be officially supported.

Nothing to lose, really, going back to 32-bit is as easy clicking in a box.

Hrrm....I had it up and running for a while fine and then the top half of my screen went fuzzy/blurry. Anyone else have issues? I'll go back later to check if my drivers are up to date.
