| Easiest Diagnosis I Ever Performed I'm not a mechanic, I just like cars. I like to read about them, talk about them and so on. A nice lady I work with starts chatting with me at the copier yesterday morning. "Hey Jeff, you have an Altima right?" My reply to her was "No, a Maxima. I've been buying Nissans for a while, what do you need?"
She proceeded to tell me how her regular car (Subaru) is in the shop for body work and she has a rented Altima. She explains to me how she thinks something is wrong with it: it's loud, it's bucking, she doesnt really need to use the brake to stop, and something is burning. So I explained that the CVT is a little different if you're not used to it, but she insisted something was wrong. I asked "Did you double-check to make sure the foot-applied parking break isn't on?" She said it was off. So, I offered to take a look. I'm no mechanic, but I could at least see if something is wrong or not since I'm familiar with the Nissans.
I go out to the parking lot, we get in. I put it in drive, and immediate she says "That's where it goes?". "I'm sorry? What?", I said. Long story short, for a 22 mile drive, she had it in manual mode - 1st gear - the entire way. Well, that explains the noise, the bucking, the engine braking, and the smell. No charge, I told her.
This wasn't a rant about anything, just my lovely friend driving to work in first gear and not realizing it, especially with the "1" prominently displayed on the dash. I did ask her why she had put it over into manual mode, and she replied that she didn't mean to, it's just that on her Subaru that's where she puts the gear selector so she did that here on the Nissan.
The next time you have a rented vehicle, please put it in D. -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.

 | reply to Jeffrey My wife drove a rental at highway speeds for an hour in 3rd gear. She even called me to say something was wrong with the car. I figured she had it in the wrong gear, but she wouldn't listen to me and check the gear selector. She was too busy complaining that something was wrong.
Oh well, it was a rental. No big deal. |

| said by matt5:See needs her license taken away. Don't need that idiot on the road. I couldn't believe it. I even tested it in my Maxima today--switching to "manual mode" and seeing how loud and obvious it was. Christ man, by the time you get to 20mph you would know something is very, very wrong.
I've heard my share of oddities - forgot that parking brake was on, but this is the second doozy I've heard in my life. The other was a coworker's wife insisted the key wouldn't come out of the ignition, so she used an overwhelming amount of force to yank it out, and broke the ignition mechanism in her Chevy. As it turns out, the car was off but still in Drive, and not in Park, hence the key not coming out.
I'm beginning to rethink about continuing my employment considering the mental capacities of the people I work with.
The best part about my coworker with the 1st gear issue is that she loves listening to classic rock and she smokes on the way to work. Seeing that car buck like crazy and the noise the engine was making would have been a sight to see. The cigarette probably flew out of her mouth 100 times on the way to work. -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY 1 edit | reply to Jeffrey I had a few lol ones, 5 quarts too much oil in the car just "adding" it with out checking lol... Coming in for brakes after the pad is almost into the fins... like... did ya not hear that lol... Trying to start a mini rofl... that one messed me up... who would think the key fob looking thing goes into the hole and down in...
But I mean for real driving around like that is lol fail.
Shows how brain dead people are "that's where I put it on my other car" like is this really how people think...
Had to add...
I can just see the same thing working for chairs at a table... lol think about it... just randomly go to sit down and fall on your ass "well that is where my chair always is" rofl... |

 | reply to Vamp said by Vamp:That poor car red lined the entire distance.. Good thing it's just a rental because that engine and transmission is toast. Naah. The rev limiter saved the engine. While probably not good for it most likely it will lead a decent (100k+) life. |

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | Saved lol, that did nothing good for that motor, and depending on the distance, anyone here kinda wondering how hot the thing got? Car aint made to cool the motor running likely over the redline for an extended period of time. The bucking was likely a fuel cut off... eh can't comment on that exact car but that normally happens after redline...
Guess we also missed the 'something is burning' part. Not good, car MAY make 100k... but I'd never ever ever buy it for any price. |

Depending upon the model, Nissan's CVT has a manual mode and a sport mode. In a CVT it makes about as much sense as tits on a bull, but they include it anyway. On the Altima v4 (I think it was an 09) moving the gear selector from "D" to the manual mode immediately drops it into a numbered "gear". Full manual. On my last few Maxima's with the CVT, when you throw it from "D" to the left, it goes into "Ds", auto-sport. Full auto, but really aggressive "shift" points. Moving the gear selector up or down (or using the F1 paddles on the steering column) will put it into manual mode.
I love Nissan's CVT, but see little use for the manual mode or the paddle shifters, for that matter. I wouldn't mind if Nissan invested in a 7-speed auto and even offered a manual mode. Dreaming a bit further, I'd love a RWD Maxima with a manual, in which case I should buy a G37. -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.

I'm a big fan of Nissan, but I don't know how long that specific vehicle is going to last. For the life of me, I don't know how she didn't see the big "1" on the dash, or the rev's constantly red-lining. Based on where she lives and the route she takes, I'd be shocked if that car even made it to 3rd "gear" once. I wouldn't want to buy that rental at auction. -- He used to say that soul shine, is better than sunshine, better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain.

 | My guess is it will make it to at least 100k. Modern engines are pretty tough. And then there's the computers that the put in them these days that help to ensure reliability.
Many cars will cool themselves with dropping cylinders and such. When I had m G35 it was in the owners manual that it would run without coolant for a while as the computer would shut off cylinders to keep itself cool. I'd imagine the Altima uses a similar system as it seems to be pretty standard now. So it will work to keep itself within operating parameters.
That being said I'm in agreement with you - I don't know how you miss the big gear # on the dash or wonder why the car sounds loud. Not to mention not putting it in D like your other car.
And I'd never buy a rental car. Between these accidental abuses and the intentional ones (google rental car _______ and you'll see a lot of crazy stuff), it's just not worth it. |

There are RWD 5MT Maximas out there, just have to look around for them. They made them with diesels, too. |

Nissan used to offer a 5MT until recently in the Maxima. As for RWD, never seen it in this country and the diesel option I thought was for 2012, but scaled back and eventually cancelled.
