v4?

Yeah, it was the 2.5 4cyl.

There are RWD 5MT Maximas out there, just have to look around for them. They made them with diesels, too.

I have never seen them in this country. A 5MT, yes. Nissan used to offer a 5MT until recently in the Maxima. As for RWD, never seen it in this country and the diesel option I thought was for 2012, but scaled back and eventually cancelled. Unless you're talking about a Maxima pre 1994, because my memory isn't good before then.

Nissan has never made a V4 engine. Offhand, I can only think of Lancia and Ford having ever made V4s for cars.

Yes, the first gen Maximas ('81-'84) were all RWD, available in either auto or 5MT, and gas or diesel. Also, Nissan stopped offering the 5MT in '01, the 6MT followed from '02-'06 (Maxima specific).

I don't mean to pick nits, but here it is right from their site. 2.5 4-cyl. We must be talking about 2 different things, yet trying to drive home the same point that the Nissan Altima in this OP has a 2.5 4-cyl engine. Whether that specific engine in the specific car in question is now toast due to my coworkers driving remains to be seen.

What pmohr is correcting is the type of engine.
Nissan makes V6 and I4 engines for that model...not a V4.

Now if you are talking about a 4th generation Altima, just say so to avoid confusion.

Ahhh, yeah I just generally use "V4" = all 4-cyl and "V6" = all 6-cyl engines, hence my confusion. No worries.

Depending upon the model, Nissan's CVT has a manual mode and a sport mode. In a CVT it makes about as much sense as tits on a bull, but they include it anyway. On the Altima v4 (I think it was an 09) moving the gear selector from "D" to the manual mode immediately drops it into a numbered "gear". Full manual. On my last few Maxima's with the CVT, when you throw it from "D" to the left, it goes into "Ds", auto-sport. Full auto, but really aggressive "shift" points. Moving the gear selector up or down (or using the F1 paddles on the steering column) will put it into manual mode.

I love Nissan's CVT, but see little use for the manual mode or the paddle shifters, for that matter. I wouldn't mind if Nissan invested in a 7-speed auto and even offered a manual mode. Dreaming a bit further, I'd love a RWD Maxima with a manual, in which case I should buy a G37.

A couple of years back I ended up with a high-end Saturn something-or-other rental car, and it had Auto/Manual/Sport modes. Sport (basically high-rev late shifts) was fun for about 10 minutes or so before it got really annoying; Manual for about three minutes; after that I stuck it back in Auto and just left it there for the rest of the week.

Well, that is the problem as you are using incorrect terminology.

V4
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V4_engine
quote:
A V4 engine is a V form engine with four cylinders and three main bearings.

Lancia produced several narrow-angle V4 engines from the 1920s through 1960s for cars like the Lambda, Augusta, Artena, Aprilia, Ardea, Appia, and Fulvia.

Ford of Europe produced two totally different V4 engines with a balance shaft, one in the UK and one in Germany:

V4 engines are mostly found nowadays in motorcycles, typically transversely mounted. Models with V4 engines

Another use of the V4 engine is in outboard motors.
I4
»en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit···irect=no
quote:
an inline-four engine is listed either as I4 or L4 (for longitudinal, to avoid confusion between the digit 1 and the letter I).
Others you may want to know about.

Just trying to see what you all think.

Heres some ideas:

V12- cant think of anything specific... but aint nothing like a Ferrari V12. Also- Lambo, McLaren, etc...

V10- what else... the Vipers pulse pounding monstrosity of a powerplant. Of course theres the Formula 1 V10s, but lets stick with production powerplants. If theres a V10 I cant think of... feel free to offer it up.

V8- 4.6, DOHC 4.6, Supercharged DOHC 4.6 and the run of the mill 5.0 or the general Chevy small block... ie- LT1, LT4, LS1, LS6. The M5 powerplant seems quite robust as does the Ferrari Modena..... etc, etc...

V6- the Grand National 3.8 (3800) turbo (or Series 2 supercharged formed).... that suckers been around the block!!
RB30DETT (300ZX?), 300GT VR4 powerplant, etc, etc...

H6- what else... but the Porsche TT H6... not sure whats the best, or if any other company even makes these... the Subie H6 really isnt up to snuff here....

I6- 3.0 2JZ from the Supra TT and the 2.6 RB26DETT from the Skyline... the new 4200 I6 from GM and the M3 powerplant.

H4 & I4- figure I may merge these into one category. Seperately theres only one choice (for now) for H4, that being Subarus EJ line up.... but collectively, there are MANY interesting choices.

3SGTE, Subie EJ series, Honda B series (B18C being my pic from there), infamous 4G63T, RB20DET, new Neon 2.4T...etc, etc...

I guess we could look at rotaries too... but only 3 come to mind and of course they are all made by Mazda. 13b, 20b and the new Renesis "13b".

So what do you all think? I am sure I missed alot... fill free to add what your picks are for most famous and/or best for each...

def

(btw- I didnt feel like adding in weird powerplants other than the rotary... ie- I5, W8, W16 etc, etc...)
