DogT join:2009-11-12 Hume, VA | Anyone switching to exede? Got advert from exede yesterday. $50/month UP TO 12Mbps, 7.5GB monthly data allowance. For $80 you get 15MB/mo which is comparable to Hughes Pro plus at 1/10 the speed. If Hughes would run at their 1.5Mb speed all the time, I wouldn't worry about it, but it goes way down in the evening and weekends and once in a while it's just not useable. Costs about $380 for installation. It looks real tempting. |

Also Hughes is launching a new satellite this year as well. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide. | reply to DogT There's also no free "Get out of FAP Jail" tokens either. At 12 mbps you could burn through your 7.5GB monthly allowance in about 3 hours, so it's crucial that you're very aware of who is doing what, and how, on your network....... -- HN7000S 99 West 1250 MHZ Professional Pro Windows 7 |

Actually it would only take 1.5 hours. That is if you don't count the upload that will also be counting against you which would make it even less than that. So you can use 12mbps for less than an hour and a half every month. What a deal! lol They are really "revolutionizing the satellite industry." I particularly love the part where they claim it can compete with DSL and Cable. -- Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit / Core i5 - 760 / GTX 460 1GB SLI / 8GB DDR3 RAM / Vertex 2 120GB SSD |

DogT join:2009-11-12 Hume, VA | That's what's holding me back. The speed may be incredible, but a typical web page loads up (after the latency) in a few seconds and how much faster could it load up, ms? Who cares. Quantity is what counts, but has to be coupled with speed. If Hughes comes through with this download bank, which I don't understand how to see it, that would help a lot. I got an email that it's available, but nothing has changed in the Download Allowance Status window. There are days when I don't use much at all and it would help to upgrade the Mac or other things with a big chunk of data. |

My guess would be the download bank on the Ku systems is being held up by limited bandwidth available. They are probably trying to move enough people so that they can handle the extra load.(At least that is my guess) -- Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit / Core i5 - 760 / GTX 460 1GB SLI / 8GB DDR3 RAM / Vertex 2 120GB SSD |

 | reply to DogT Yes - great speeds. I do not use the internet every day and certainly not heavily. Couldn't stream on Hughesnet because of the speed; can't stream on Exede because of the caps. But when I use it for browsing, downloading pics, etc. it is like being on cable internet ( at the right time of day). Fantastic. Work from home. Connect to the office. Caps maybe a problem but the Hughesnet speed was killing me. Very happy. |

DogT join:2009-11-12 Hume, VA | Hey, Nick, you're just down the road from me.
I thought about it and decided that the amount and how we use internet, Hughes is adequate for now. I'm not willing to spend another $380 just to get faster downloads, web sites load up just fine. The limits aren't an issue for me as I hardly ever bump up against the FAP unless we download some big updates or one time when I was doing a clean install of Vista, took me 3 days to get all the updates. We get typically 1800kbps in the morning and it drops off to 150 or so in the evenings, and if the download manager works for some things, that's free allowance. There are a few days a year when it's just not usable because of the slow speeds, and always in the evening.
It would be great if Exede upped/relaxed or gave a free period like HN and I'm sure then there would be a stampede to Exede.
Did HN offer you any discounts to stay or did you just cut them off. Which plan did you have? We have the Pro+ |
|
 | reply to DogT HughesNet usage for last month was 10GB daytime plus 27GB night time, downloading about half the nights. Discounted pro plan at $60/month. I think I'll stick with it. |

DogT join:2009-11-12 Hume, VA | fleece, Are you saying HN gave you a discount? |
|
 | said by DogT:fleece, Are you saying HN gave you a discount? Yes. There are "Customer Loyalty" discounts available at the end of your 2 year initial contract. You have to commit to a further year. I missed the deadline (which I didn't know about) and they gave me a $10 discount for 6 months anyway, with no commitment. I asked about the whole thing on the community forum, and all they would say is call to see if you're eligible. |

Even though I pay the full $79.99/mo, it's pretty consistently returning ~2000k down and 230k up (off peak) with an average monthly cap of just under 14.5GB. I'm passing on Exede, gonna wait till the Jupiter service is offered later this year.

Who knows, maybe Exede will offer a special plan for Hughes members who 'jump ship.' |

 | reply to DogT One redeeming feature of Exede is the higher FAP speed. At 128kb/s it should still be perfectly usable for browsing, and it's still faster than dial-up. HN's FAP speed runs about 50kb/s if you're lucky and causes page load problems. |

Again with the apples and oranges; old HN, new Exede. Would be "prudent" to wait on that comparison until Gen4 hits the street. And the following should be considered neither speculation nor fact, I'm just passing on something that was mentioned after a recent Webinar; Gen4 FAP thresholds of 40GB and 60GB per month, depending upon subscription plan. -- HN7000S - 98cm Prodelin/2w "pure" Osiris - ProPlus - G16/1010H - NOC:GTN - NAT 67.142.115.130 - Gateway 66.82.25.10 - DNS 66.82.4.12 and 66.82.4.8 - Firefox 8/MSIE9 - AV/Firewalled by NIS2012 |
