Re: [General] Help me choose a new cheaper VOIP provider

One thing to watch for in prepaid deals is can you keep getting it. $199 for two years is good but when terms up $199 for 1 year not so good.

I have seen Voipo offer requiring specials to its current subscriber base don't think I have seen any with Phonepower. (They may offer them just haven't seen it.)

Anveo is located just outside of Philadelphia, PA.

Corporately Anveo is in PA but I was wondering if the only SIP server is located in TX? Not that 20-25 ms more in ping time to Anveo is meaningful just that providers I have used before and now seem closer but I just curious.

I wish more internet companies (not just VoIP) shared this data and made it accessible to potential new clients.

When picking a VoIP service, or any service that requires low latency connections (Google Apps for Domains for example), I want to be able to know where my connection will be routed.

Living in Houston, I get very good latency to Dallas, so any company that has a POP in Dallas would be tops on my list. However, more times than not, this data is not available, or not available until you are already a customer, which is too late to make an informed decision.

Good point.....didn't think of that. Any 2+ year PhonePower users out there?

Anveo Rapid Voice Delivery Network is no secret and it can be viewed without having an account. It clearly shows that Anveo have POPs in Dallas, Montreal and Nuremberg.

Voip.ms also show their server locations without the need of having an account.

BTW. One good thing with Anveo is that you don't need to change server if the server you are connected to is down. You probably never will notice if a POP is down.

Mike, welcome back to the forum! Haven't seen you around this neck of the woods in years. Hope everything is alright with you.

Hey Dog. Glad to be back around. Good to see you, doc, dc, Mike, and the others still posting. It's been a crazy year. Nothing really bad, just really busy. I did spend a few weeks in and out of the country. But we've been busy with my son who's a senior getting ready to graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy. My wife's folks have been having health/hospital issues. And of course, back in october a water pipe burst in our house and flooded out our entire downstairs. LOL!!! Kept me offline for a while. Been a busy year. Probably won't be on as much as I use to, but I'll try to poke in more often. later... mike...

There is also FutureNine, though (?) they may not have the call blocking. But very good value.

We are working on this. (and yes I know I've been saying this forever - I'll step down on the pedal...)

Very happy Voipo user. Comments about their web interface are somewhat valid but not a big deal. For the most part, set it and forget it is the rule. I did the 2 year for one deal a year ago and they have made it available to both new and customers like me to renew since and I will try to take advantage again before my current plan run out.

Thank you for illustrating my point. Very few providers share this information. Additionally, without a direct link, Anveo does not make navigation to their network page easy. I still cannot find how to navigate to that page and Ive been to the Anveo site many times.

At least the good providers do share this information.

It's easy. Just go to Company, About at the bottom left. That was the first page I viewed when I discovered Anveo.

Just Google for [Anveo network] and it will be the first hit.

I hardly ever make bookmarks or remember links anymore. I just Google to connect.

I might get flogged for even considering this.....but would MagicJack Plus be an option now that they port phone #'s? Or is the service level not good enough to consider?

Figure maybe I could do a two phone number setup with both the Obi110 running Google Voice and the MagicJack Plus device plugged into the landline phone jack of the Obi.

If the control panel for the Voipo consumer service is the same as their reseller trial website:

»voipo.com/help/article/demo-cont···103.html

I can see why it's got a reputation for not being polished.

You live in a somewhat rural area where the local incumbent telco in the old days was GTE, not Bell of Pennsylvania.

MagicJack sometimes has issues connecting to rural areas and/or to places served by independent telcos.

In fact, Pennsylvania has a huge number of independent incumbent telcos....such as Hickory, Yukon Waltz, The North-Eastern Pennsylvania Telephone Company, and many others.

Just to be aware of.

Here's a 40 page thread on this issue:

Yes, it’s very similar to this with, perhaps, a few more features.

Thanks for the heads up....guess I can't win....I do live in an old GTE area. I had Verizon local POTS and DSL when I lived in nearby Reading, then when I bought the house and moved my cheap $15 local Verizon phone service turned into a $30+ local phone service and no DSL just because I moved to an "old GTE" service area. Silly me thinking Verizon would be Verizon....that's where I dropped them and went VOIP over six years ago.
