Electronic Box Static IP?

Hi guys, I've just come out of the Teksavvy forum in complete disappointment and pretty much expect to be cancelling my service with them *very* soon once I find an alternative. Waiting until Feb. 2nd to publish the mandatory $8 modem rental fee for 25/7 and the extra network fees for 2M/6M is just dirty.

In my search, Electronic Box is currently winning with their 60M/3M cable service, but my only concern is getting a static IP. I just got off the phone with one of their reps and she kept insisting that for $5/mo I could get beta IPv6, but of course I want a good ol' IPv4 for now. Does anybody know whether they genuinely offer static IPs and, if so, how to get them?

As a bonus question, if you have any other suggestions for just outside of the island of Montreal that would be great. Really all I'm looking for is decent upload speeds and a static IP. Don't care if it's DSL or cable, but Videotron was out in my backyard 3 weeks ago installing brand new lines and FTTN ;- )

It's too bad that February 2nd had to turn out to be such a disaster...

I believe for larger upload speeds, you're best bet (price/speed) is to mlppp a couple of dsl lines, a few dslr peeps do this currently. Not sure if ebox does mlppp.
EBox is testing static ip for cable, there is interest from a few of us..

Hi CoreM,

there is no static ipv6 over cable technology only ipv4, We can assign a single ip over a tunnel over cable. Currently it is in beta so this means that we do not guarantee the performance.

So far eboxdom was able to achieve 45 Mbits on his home router so it is not bad. Upstream is full 3 Mbits.

Thanks Jean-Philippe!

Do you know what needs to be done in order to set that up on my end? Do I need to manually create a VPN tunnel from the router, or do is everything done transparently in the background?

I do apologize, I have tried searching your blog and website but can't seem to find any concrete information about how your static IP setup works.

You need to create the tunnel in your router ( tomato firmware or others )

You can also create the tunnel directly in your computer with windows, linux or osx vpn client.

What are you using, PPTP? OpenVPN?

The VPN server they use to bypass throthling is PPTP. All that is needed is to shift packets by a few bytes.

I *assume* they use the same one for cable. It may not be secure but it does the job.

Well, PPTP would make the most sense since it is overall the simplest and effectively has the lowest overhead as far as I'm aware.

My only concerns with using VPN in order to get a static IP address would be:

A) What it does to latency
B) Whether I can host my web & VPN server inside the network

Setting a point to point VPN isn't too much of a problem since my router is a pfSense box with more than enough hardware backing it, it's just that I'm not sure I would be able to host my stuff which is the entire point of needing a static IP in the first place...

diskace, could you please explain how IPv6 assigned for customers, is it 'native IPv6' or 'IPv6 rapid deployment' like in videotron network.
Which firmware you can confirm is compatible with your deployment?
Should I pay additional fee for ipv6?
