Win 7 Desktop Icons Policy?

I'm green when it comes to Group Policy Manager.
Server 2008

I'm trying to keep the workstation desktop icons from being deleted by students.

The article I found to help me with this says the settings for this
should be in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Personalization

»technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr···%29.aspx

I don't have a Personalization folder under Control Panel folder.

Is there a setting in some other location?
Is there an updated set of templates I need to apply?
Did I head down the wrong road and need to go in another direction for this?

I have a folder of shortcuts on the desktops that some not nice kiddos keep deleting.
Just trying to lock it down now so they can't delete or move the desktop icons around.

Thanks

Put your shortcuts in the 'all users' directory, C:\Users\Public\Desktop\

then set whatever permissions on those shortcuts using the administrator account.

How do I push those permissions out to 60 machines?

Thru a GPO or some other way?

techjoe: Great resource for GP stuff. Thanks for that.

Sorry about the slow reply on this. I was just now able to work with this. I setup a few shortcuts for a lab
and have them set to Replace.

Tho I'm not seeing the shortcuts show up when they are missing.
Do I need to set the shortcuts to create then change them to replace?

Shouldn't the initial setting for replace create the icons like the
video showed?

I appreciate all the help. Thanks.

Do they show up when you do a gpupdate /force? What about when you logon?

It says the policy is finished but still no icons if they missing.
Here is how I have the shortcut configured.

The shortcuts should show inside of a desktop folder called
Applications.

Try removing "Applications\" from the Name. Replace is correct. And no offense, but you did link the GPO that these are in to an OU with the user account, riiiight?

None taken at all.. I'm learning

I have the GPO linked to the Lab machines group.
So any user that loges into any lab machine, should have this done.
Or is that my problem? lol

is it a user policy or a computer policy?
is a user policy it needs to apply to users

I put this under User Configuration as the video showed.

Looking at this more...
Do I need to move this under Computer Configuration
instead of user configuration to apply it to the lab computer no matter who logs in?

I think it might have issues with applying a user policy to a computer

but first have you tried the other sujjestions>

Based on this you may need to check out Loopback processing.

User policies in a GPO only apply to user objects. Same goes for machine. Be careful turning on loopback. Bad things can (do) happen. It is a huge pain in the ass to troubleshoot GPO application issues with it on.

However, fear not! There is a better option.

Why not just set it under the Computer Configuration node and have it go on the "All Users" desktop? That way it will apply without loopback and be placed on the machine's "All Users" profile so everyone gets it.

Open a command prompt on a PC and run GPRESULT or GPRESULT /R for Win 7.

It will show if the GPO is applying.
