'Compatible by Default' and Add-ons Compatibility Reporter

Compatible by Default and the Add-ons Compatibility Reporter
by Brian King - 2-Feb-2012 - via Planet Mozilla
quote:
Firefox 10 is out and add-ons are now Compatible By Default.

As reports are coming in that some add-ons are not working, I wanted to write a quick note on how this feature plays alongside the Add-on Compatibility Reporter (ACR) extension.

In short, the ACR settings that make add-ons compatible are themsleves not compatible with Compatible By Default in Firefox. So these settings have been disabled in ACR, and the extension acts now only as a reporting tool. To put it another way, ACR no longer makes old add-ons work, deferring completely this task to Firefox

Good to know chachazz See Profile, so far I have kept 3.6 and was hesitant about the 9's due to compatibility issues among other things, sounds like 10 is more of a winner.

Disabling compatibility checking didn't actually make an add-on "work" in the first place--merely gave it the chance to work (and it might, or not). The real change is that before, it was assumed that an extension wouldn't work unless its author verified that it did and said so in the rdf. Now, it's assumed that it will (if the last update is within the range of "Rapid Releases" -- generally, since Fx4), and if it doesn't... meh. The burden is still on the author to make it work. It's just that Mozilla now has a "Whatever." attitude about it and nothing will stand in the way of Rapid Release. Mostly, I just see it as [now] a "glass is half full" vs. [before] a "glass is half empty" approach... the glass hasn't really changed.

Yep. Nothing has really changed. I have one extension that I consider essential. It's last update was Aug 2011. That is since Fx 4 but I am not convinced it will work on Fx 10. My other extensions have had updates that are more recent. But I have about 50% of my extensions that will not even work with Fx4 so I would expect that even more would not work with Fx 10.

I'm going to eventually switch to the Enterprise version anyway. That way, no hassles for a year.
