Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | 25mbit Ontario DSL providers (unlimited or close?) I've had dual ISP connections for a few years now: Rogers Extreme cable (the crummy old 10mbit grandfathered one - must fix that one of these days) and 5mbit DSL with TSI. Well, close to 5mbit... I'm hovering around 4.5mbit sync right now.
At any rate, for a few months Bell has been claiming I can get 25mbit in my neighborhood; I assume a remote has been installed. However one of the things I need beyond what Rogers can offer is transfer allowance - I make pretty good use of that slow 4.5mbit line.
After browsing around the new ISP landscape tonight, it seems the easiest way to get unlimited transfers is on a Rogers cable reseller - there's a good selection of well-priced options. Except I'm "retentioned" in with Rogers until around October - unless someone knows of a way to get out of the Internet part of that contract. Otherwise, I'm stuck looking for an unlimited DSL provider.
I see TSI has an option (300gb plus off-peak would do me fine) and... what else is there? I can't actually find anything. |

| reply to Sunfox They are doing a price Increase In march which would be a material change to the terms of the Contract quite possibly, - also TSI offpeak unlimited is DSL only not cable. -- Every time Someone leaves Sympatico an Angel gets its wings.

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | Hmm, very good point! I recall that's been used in the past by some folks. Plus, not to mention that even with the price increase I'm still only getting 10/1/95 when I could be at 28/1/120 (but only by spending even more money - $200 or $7/month for a craptacular router).
I find it hard not to be wooed by the 25/7 plan's 7mbit uploads. That could be very useful for me.
Although if I can get out of Rogers, I could take up Bell's $28 25/7 offer for a year, and then switch to third-party unlimited cable. |

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | Anyways, judging by the lack of response to the original point, I'm guessing no other ISP in Ontario has announced 25/7 DSL. I'm not looking for cable - DSL. |

How do you know? -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. | Very few ISPs have deployed FTTN service. In the past, due to the interim nature of the rates, and now, because they are busy implenting the new rates and I guess later on we may see more FTTN offerings.
However, in Québec, it appears that Videotron TPIA prices so so much lower than Bell's FTTN that only people who need the 7mbps upload will go for FTTN prices. |

Second time I see you spamming their name on forums today. First to say they offer the best prices on Qc cable (although they are not published), and now to say they offer 25/7 service.
Do you work for them, to get this secret info? |

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | reply to Sunfox Well, Rogers is playing hardball and refuses to waive the contract termination fee. They actually said they have the right to raise the rates to whatever they want and, if I'm in a contract, there's nothing I can do about it except cancel... with a full penalty.
That's ticked me off enough that I'm going to do it. |

That's ticked me off enough that I'm going to do it. There is a trick. This is what i did to cancel their cable tv: I called and asked to downgrade my package from a $200 a month package to the most basic monthly package. That took it down to about $35. I waited 2 days and i called them again and gave them my 30 days notice. This way instead of paying a whole month of $200, i paid only a whole month of $35. |

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | They're claiming $20/month for the duration of the contract. However when I pointed out how that was more than the actual savings offered by the contract, they were willing to discuss charging back the amount saved over the contract so far. |

| reply to Sunfox Changing the rates on a contract without bothering to include the terms of how much the rates will change by is against contract law in two fashions:
-- Material change in the contract unless it is specified -- Most importantly, even if it were specified, no meeting of the minds occurred on the changes in price within the contract UNLESS the clause specifies something such as increases due to operating costs, etc. (in which case Rogers will need to provide you details as to how their operating costs have increased). -- Also important is that contracts require consideration. An increase in price that is not justified by something like increased operating costs would need to be backed up by an increase in service. A contract is never valid unless you receive compensation for giving something up (that's why you will find many companies give their employees $1 of stock for having them sign NDAs/agreements not to work with competitors, etc).
Break the contract, explaining their material change and a lack of meeting of the minds, pay the penalty, and sue in small claims to get the penalty back, that's what I would do. In this case the rules are crystal clear, so I think the judge would let you tack on penalties, or at least court costs. |
