Workers feel impact of new Internet billing practice
TekSavvy lays off 56 employees to trim costs
By Bob Boughner
Posted 6 hours ago
Fifty-six part-time workers at TekSavvy Solutions Inc. in Chatham have been laid off.

"We're hoping it's only temporary,'' company spokesperson Kate do Forno told The Daily News Thursday.

She said the independent Internet service provider has been forced to "streamline and trim costs'' as a result of CRTC billing practice decision announced last fall.

At the time, Teksavvy officials expressed disappointment with the rates for the wholesale high-speed services that were approved by the CRTC.

The rates were for services that Internet service providers need to purchase from the large telephone and cable companies, such as Bell and Rogers, in order to provide Internet access services to their own retail customers.

At the time the new rates were announced, Marc Gaudrault, Teksavvy's CEO, said the CRTC decision was a step backward for consumers.

He said the new rates would make it much harder for independent providers to compete.

He called it an unfortunate development for telecommunications competition in Canada.

The Daily News was tipped off about the lay offs Thursday in an e-mail by one of the affected employees, who stated there was no notice given.

"I was at work yesterday and at 12:30 (p.m.) I was informed that it was my last shift and I was no longer needed, however they are keeping us on call," said the worker.

Once the company has a better handle on costs it will reconsider its hiring needs, do Forno.

She said the company, which is re-locating this month to a new address on Richmond Street, employs more than 200 workers.

Oh boy... wait times going back up. If they need to lay off that amount of even part timers, how are they affording a bigger building to move to?

I hesitate to say it but, TSI seems to have had tunnel vision

It likely has to do with contracts.

Labour - being unorganized - probably has no contract.

Real Estate - on the other hand - probably has a wicked huge contract. It may also save on costs after the initial move. (Imagine leasing 2 or 3 smaller units, vs. one big unit)

Looks like we'll see more price increases from Bellsavvy at this rate.

I'm sad to read about this. When good people lose their jobs, that's rough. My sympathies to them. I'm sure this is the last thing that the higher ups at Teksavvy wanted.

The summer rush will hit again, followed by September's student crush... no worries.

Ott_Cable

@teksavvy.com

For the students to arrive in Sept., wouldn't they have to leave TSI for the summer?

Short term customers would cost ISP money than long term ones.

BellSavvy is top heavy.

If you look at the list of authorized employees (and it's old)

4 VP's
6 Directors
10 Managers.

The death spiral has begun.....

You know your rep is going down when people are mixing up your company name with "Bell" lol

Maybe the CRTC can start a donation fund for them since they put them out of a job.

Bellsavvy indeed.

Everytime there was a decision that Bhell didn't like, they had to perform some kind of consequence, which gets media attention and public outrage.

- Back in early 2000s, when Quebec court ordered that women must receive the same salary than men, Bhell has cut jobs and moved them to Ontario and India.

- Back in the late 90's, when the CRTC opened competition for long-distance and phone provider, Bhell introduced network fees.

- And a happy decision: back 2 years ago with UBB, when the CRTC said that whatever monthly cap Bhell have, wholesale will have, Bhell increased the monthly cap from 40 Gb to 50 Gb, and the maximum overage from 50$ to 60$.

Has Teksavvy, now Bellsavvy, used the cutting jobs technique to show the CRTC that they're not happy with the decision?

Obviously none of us know what their books look like but this sounds like a way to drive profits back up and sacrifice quality. The mission has become a "Whatever lets just drive profits, we can't please them all".

Even their employees that were laid-off are unhappy with the lack of notice. People have bills to pay and the loyalty people have shown i'm a little thrown back at the lack of return to even their own employees. No way did they not know they were laying people off earlier or given them 4 weeks notice at LEAST to get prepared.

I don't doubt Marc was thrown back by the CRTC decision but the lack of organization has left them scattering by the looks and sounds of it.

ya that's pretty bad.

Hi, welcome to work, today's your last day, goodbye.

they asked the wrong question to the lawyers. "What do we HAVE to do?".

Should have asked, "What SHOULD we do?".

Re: try again

It's the lack of respectful notice. We as employees out of respect not law are required to provide notice if we are quitting because it's the respectful thing to do.

I'm as i said a bit thrown back TSI went the route of the famous Trump. "You're Fired", this is your last day. Odds in out of 56 people having no kids are slim.

I never have never will defend TSI but i felt for the mission their "were" trying to achieve. It seems since the new VP i believe Truth mentioned Pierre the one who wrote the blog awhile back came onboard the "friendliness" TSI once was, was explained to the higher ups had to go and we're in this for the money guys. Not to make friends.

Since the shift in atmosphere over there, i whole heartedly believe their mission changed as well.

Yes 10000% it's a business and they need to make money, but when you DO start to look like the little brother of the bigger telco's it's a scary thought. That's all i'm saying on the matter.

I still respect Marc and Rocky, i hope since they are making changes as another user stated the company is top heavy and needs to be lightened a little. Too many managers, VP's and Directors. Get a board of directors together. I'd say i hope things change but i've said that since cable was introduced. Hope has died and i don't see TSI in the same light anymore.

I would be amazed if TSi didn't give them at least 2 weeks severance. There are often rules about that, but they aren't actually codified into statutes. Instead, they exist as precedent.
