Re: try again

everyone that was part time was apparently put down to "0" hours and they're on call from what i heard. Now they all have to go get unemployment/a new job

They don;t have to give you any notice, but pay in lieu of that notice. When I got the boot from last company I was given 5 minutes notice, but 16 weeks severance.

.....I'd love to say this is the last of it but...

a birdie has told me that things might not be as smooth for TSI as it sounds...that this 56 may be the tip of the iceberg?

...Sounds like they expanded into too much too fast and now are paying the price?...which is what I feared from before.

i think part of it is that a lot of TSI customers were paying for unlimited even if they weren't exceeding their cap, just for the peace of mind of not having to worry

now with the price going up, people are downgrading and actually paying less than before

edit: and Bell and Rogers running 1/2 price deals probably isn't helping either

I don't think the layoffs have any correlation with the new pricing schemes, as they are 2 days old.

I do think they expanded to fast which put them in a bad spot, now Bell and Rogers are taking advantage.

The fustration of non Ontarian customers being left in the dark doesn't help.

I hope they get everything back in order, I'm leaving as soon as my cable from Ebox is connected but up until the recent fiasco I did enjoy my service here. I have never had an extended problem or anything that was not taken care of quickly.

Best of luck to those who were let go

I don't think part time workers get severance.

i still find it a double standard. Give us notice but we won't give you any.

5 minutes notice? that's a sickening way to conduct business. It shows absolutely ZERO care for those who work for you. If TSI cared about "the people" and "the industry" as much as they said over the years i don't think things would be where they are now.

Frankly I don't know how a business model can work that depends on a government bureaucracy forcing your competitors to provide the infrastructure critical to run your business. What could go wrong with that?

I hope that this is not a sign of hard times ahead for TSI, or any of the independent ISPs. I dread the day when the only providers of internet access are Bhell and Robbers.

I truly empathize with the laid off employees. I've been there and it isn't very pleasant. It sounds terrible to let someone go without notice, but sometimes it's necessary if the worker has dealings with customers. I've heard from Teksavvy's phone support agents on more than one occasion "it's company policy"; so I guess they'll understand that it's just company policy.

Actually not so strange... Back in the early IBM PC (pre-clone) days, Intel was forced to license their chip designs to AMD because IBM wants a 2nd source for their chips to use in a PC.

...I've provided the penny I can provide. I really can't say anything else to be honest. That's why I'm looking at my available options.

Regrettably, it's a necessary security measure. The sacked employee doesn't have time to vandalize anything before they leave.

anyone in a position that given notice they could do damage to the company is not to be told ahead of time of pending layoff or termination.

SOP is most businesses.

Usually that employee goes to swipe and magically their swipe pass doesn't work, then security gets involved . Not that I've had that happen to me, but I've seen it happen to others unfortunately...I've also been escorted out on my last day, but I was resigning from the position with 2 weeks notice but...they still had to escort me out on the last day....weird, but...it was what it was.

Like I said in another post.

I think teksavvy moving to cable offerings was a very very bad idea.

The complaints on this board alone since cable was unveiled were a daily thing.

With DSL, you could log in four days later and not see many threads.

They saw "a little window" and went for it, instead of actually thinking things through.

Lets see, DSL, Cable, Res Phone, VOIP, what else do they do?

I had referred people to teksavvy because they were simple and good at what they did, now it's like a bell all over again.

- I would restrict anymore signings of cable period. OMIT one issue . and dealing with rogers well? if teksavvy stops it with them rogers might... might wake up.

Uh, TSI did those people a favor. They are possibly getting paid out due to lack of notice, but the most important part is that those part timers may be eligible to collect some EI. TSI could have just given them 0-3 hours and not let them go.

When the affected employee deals with clients directly in any capacity, it would be very poor business practice to keep that employee any longer than it would take for him to clear their desk, get their personal belongings, and have security escort them out the door. Otherwise, the damage that can be done to the company by the employee can be significant.

I'm certain part timers are entitled to severance, and their portion of "vacation pay".

As Kyrio said, these people could have been trimmed to maybe no work to 4 hours per week. At that point, they are not eligible for EI, as they are still technically on the payroll.

Methinks there's something brewing at TSI, and it doesn't have an appeasing aroma.

If they didn't get severance, ya, it is a crappy company (even if they don't have to pay severance to part time employees).

If they got paid instead of notice then it is not bad.
