[FYI] Teksavvy lays off 56 employees

Workers feel impact of new billing practice ; BUSINESS: TekSavvy lays off 56 employees to trim costs

The Chatham Daily News

Byline: BOB BOUGHNER, THE DAILY NEWS

Fifty-six part-time workers at TekSavvy Solutions Inc. in Chatham have been laid off.

"We're hoping it's only temporary,'' company spokesperson Kate do Forno told The Daily News Thursday.

She said the independent Internet service provider has been forced to "streamline and trim costs'' as a result of CRTC billing practice decision announced last fall.

At the time, Teksavvy officials expressed disappointment with the rates for the wholesale high-speed services that were approved by the CRTC.

The rates were for services that Internet service providers need to purchase from the large telephone and cable companies, such as Bell and Rogers, in order to provide Internet access services to their own retail customers.

At the time the new rates were announced, Marc Gaudrault, Teksavvy's CEO, said the CRTC decision was a step backward for consumers.

He said the new rates would make it much harder for independent providers to compete.

He called it an unfortunate development for telecommunications competition in Canada.

The Daily News was tipped off about the lay offs Thursday in an e-mail by one of the affected employees, who stated there was no notice given.

"I was at work yesterday and at 12:30 (p. m.) I was informed that it was my last shift and I was no longer needed, however they are keeping us on call," said the worker.

Once the company has a better handle on costs it will reconsider its hiring needs, do Forno.

She said the company, which is re-locating this month to a new address on Richmond Street, employs more than 200 workers.

I'm guessing with the new pricing structure in place, there will be fewer signups of new customers, less tech support to provide for new installs, etc.

Probably they also sorted out some of the cable issues so they don't need as many staff for that.

Still, a somewhat disturbing piece of news

I warned those who left their employment for Teksavvy that it was not a good idea. Just gotta say "I told you so"

How many people decided to leave their full time jobs for part time jobs at TSI, that you had so many to warn?

Say what? This makes no sense. YOu know teksavvy is to blame for something. Shit. Everything TSI does comments are to blame someone else.

The big 3 has nothing to do with their hiring and firing. I believe TSI can be held accountable for some things in their business adventure.

It shows a clear disorganized organization and they are no realizing it thus the layoffs. If there is one thing the big guys can't be blamed for its teksavvys own internal decisions.

@rogers.com

i was part of a 700 person layoff at Bell....if tek is laying off this many people they are seriously screwed...they dont have anywhere near the resources of Bell...this company is screwed

Didn't they purchase a ton of extra interconnects in November/December?

Those must be coming online now. And at 10x (or more) the rate they were at before?

TSI must be paying at least 200k-250k/mo for all those interconnects. Thank you CRTC!

This better not be a ploy to impress the CRTC unless the employees agreed to do it, which I doubt.

Failing to make payroll and accounts payable would be a problem. Trimming costs in times of uncertainty is just prudent.

Re:56 seasnonal employees

When August rolls around I'm fairly certain they'll rehire 56 in anticipation of the September crush when students go back to colleges. Since this is fairly "seasonal" and it'd make sense because they wouldn't have to retrain CSR's with the exception of updating their info base and skill sets to bring them in line with the then current atmosphere. Then again following the xmas holidays release them again. Just sayin.

x2 They went on a hiring spree due to seasonal demand, explosive growth and lots of publicity. I see that all 3 of these are subsiding, as well as other providers doing better.

This is a very natural and prudent process. I don't read anything more into it than that. It's unfortunate they chose to blame it on the CRTC - I think that was a tactical error and whoever decided to play it like that should be put over R0cky's knee in a diaper and spanked vigorously.

And no TimBits for a week.

My imaginary timeline: 2011: Clearing all modems/hardwares -> 2012: 56 layoffs -> 2013: ???
