Re: [FYI] Teksavvy lays off 56 employees

how many employees do they have in total? 56 is just a number, it doesnt tell me how drastic this is.

no notice given?(i'm hoping they gave them the 2weeks pay anyway?)

this layoff, together with the never ending "it's not our fault => not our job" mentality makes me worry about the future of teksavvy....

It's in the article at the bottom. More than 200.
Now don't go saying "more than 200" can mean 2,000.
It usually means something like 210-250, whatever.

So, 56 employees out of 200, that's over 1/4 of their staff.

Of course, part-time employees count for a lot less. These could be people putting in 10 hours a week, so, the equivalent of 12-15 employees.

They hired too many too fast for a sudden rise in subsciptions, and wasted a lot of resources to train people they got rid of after only 6 months. What a waste.

All those angry at Teksavvy have every right to be so, but what can Teksavvy do? Do you want them to storm Bells/Rogers Main office with pitchforks and torches until the problems are fixed?

This thread is quite amusing. Not amusing that people were laid off but amusing that a bunch of nerds feel like this is their cause because Teksavvy isn't giving them answers. Your not necessarily entitled to answers. Don't like it? Then leave. As far as notice these people get pay in lieu of notice, happens all the time and is prudent for employers to do. Move on.

People are just leaving in droves to better ISP's with lower prices and better services.

The biggest thing that is not being told about these agents is that all 56 that were laid off were TPT or Temporary PT. This means, that they could be laid off without notice. They were hired for busy periods only. The one thing that was given to these agents was the opportunity to transition to Hybrid agents (working both customer service and Tech Support), but not a lot of agents took that opportunity.

I spoke with some of those temporary agents. I doubt some of them had what it takes to become Tech Support.

"I see you're on the 6 aadsol"

Still sucks, obviously.

Oh - Teksavvy had 270 employees as of last ~November.

It's always sad when we hear about layoffs within a tech company. it just goes to show that no industry is layoff proof even IT. I hope my friends at TSI made the cut. I for one have not had a job since TSI and was thinking about re applying. I guess that is out of the question now.

Sometimes layoffs happen, its the way of the economy these days. I tend to think that it not entirely The CRTC's fault, but rather a culmination of a number of factors.

There is no single company that I've heard of has grown and expanded exponentially like TSI, at some point growth has to stop temporarily. TSI is doing what it has to do in order to stay competitive, if that means trimming some fat to regain some costs they have every right to do so. If regaining 1200 man hours a week at lets say 14$/h . that's saving 67k a month. Makes me wonder if this number is close to The increased GAS prices mandated by the CRTC.

Au contraire, TSI is following the exact same path many good companies have travelled before: Small business success followed by too-rapid expansion. Then the bankers get involved and start dictating company policy - if the company wants more money to fund things after the inevitable end of the expansion, that is.

What follows *that* is often not pretty: a mix of cost cutting and revenue generating measures (eg. layoffs and price hikes), but the terminal stage is raising capital from outside sources, either by bringing in a wealthy investor or taking the shares public.

Once outside funding gets involved, it will demand changes in exchange for the money and the MBAs will start taking control of company policy. Whatever was attractive about the small company gets left in the dust, and all concerns are secondary to profit.

The final stage is either success, market failure, or the now public shares get bought by a competitor who then removes all traces of the original company. We, the current customers of TSI, will probably decide which one of those 3 outcomes occurs via market churn.

Facebook grew 100x faster than TSI and managed to escape pretty much all of the above by transitioning from small to big very rapidly indeed. There was no dangerous "medium-sized company" period, like TSI is going through right now.

This story is not over, and I'm still willing to wait and see how it turns out. But companies that lose their character ("sell their soul") while simultaneously becoming uncompetitive usually don't make it to the finish line intact.

@cgocable.ca

The only problem with the lay-offs is that I placed an order 3 days ago and it was not processed yet ....

People.... look up Ontario Labor law, depending on the length of employment, sometimes no notice is required. They were part time as well.

then again, it could have been a worse world-wide Canadian-embarrassment, like Nortel ?, who finally laid off like what? 250,000 worldwide I think ?, not to mention spin-offs,....
...And all that, just so Bell Canada could become, once again, the MONOPOLY that Trudeau had "tried" to dismantle, for our/competitoins' sake ?. -err um, now that we're all in the future again ?
Too bad, eh.
-oops
ahh well.
